In the heart of South Africa, nestled near the rushing waters of the Vaal River, lies an extraordinary establishment, a testament to one man's journey from academia to the thrilling world of outdoor adventure. Graeme Addison, a former Professor of Communication and a revered media expert, has carved a unique path that blends his intellectual prowess with his passion for the wild outdoors.
From lecture halls to river rapids
Born in Johannesburg, Graeme's academic journey is as diverse as it is impressive. With a BA in Economics from Wits University, honours in English Literature from Unisa, and an MA Cum Laude in Journalism from Rhodes University, he has made significant contributions to the world of education and media. He has served as a senior lecturer at Rhodes University, the Head of the Department of Journalism and Public Relations at Technikon Natal, and a Professor of Communication at the University of North West.
Graeme's wife, Karen, also has a love for the outdoors and she joins him on nearly every excursion - whether it be a relaxing hike or the raging rapids, Karen is up for the adventure!
A penchant for paddles and pages
However, Graeme's story takes an adventurous turn. The author of "White Water: The World's Wildest Rivers" and "Whitewater Rafting," he is not just a man of words but also a man of action. A qualified national tour guide in rafting, hiking, and mountain biking, Graeme has been a trailblazer in the South African adventure scene. He pioneered whitewater rafting in the country and continues to lead expeditions and commercial trips from his base on the Vaal River.
Graeme's contributions extend beyond academia and adventure. He has been the General Editor and researcher for influential books on African humanism and leadership, like "Let Africa Lead" and "Attuned Leadership." His work as a media practitioner and trainer in corporates showcases his commitment to imparting knowledge and skills.
The entrepreneurial edge
Graeme's entrepreneurial spirit is evident in his stint as the marketing director and owner of an outdoor adventure company, Rivermen/Trailblazers, from 1981 to 1988. His expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship also shines through in his series of books on South Africa's history of innovations, notably the Edge Series: Innovation Nation. These days, the main focus is on Riverman Rafting where Graeme and his team take families, school groups and corporate teams out to conquer the white rapids of the Vaal River.
Embracing the Digital Age
In today's digital world, Graeme continues to engage and inspire. His posts on his Facebook page, and the Adventure Standards Africa site, attract thousands of followers. He edits and publishes books and reports on various topics, proving his versatility and adaptability in the ever-evolving media landscape.
As a writer, researcher, adventurer, and entrepreneur, Graeme Addison's journey is a compelling narrative of how one can traverse the realms of academia and adventure, leaving an indelible mark in both.
