GARDEN ROUTE, WESTERN CAPE - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has sounded the alarm with an Orange level 9 warning for potential widespread flooding due to disruptive rainfall across the Garden Route.
The alert spans from Sunday, 24 September to Monday, 25 September, covering Overberg, Garden Route, and southern Cape Winelands Districts in the Western Cape.
Intense Weather Conditions to Prevail
A cut-off low pressure system emerged along South Africa's west coast on the night of 23 September, right after a mild cold front's passage. This development has primed the Eastern Cape and Western Cape for severe weather disturbances. Regions will grapple with the threat of extensive flooding, hazardous seas, and potent winds.
Several Days Projected
The torrential downpour is forecasted for the wild coast and its adjacent interior in the Eastern Cape, as well as Overberg, southern Cape Winelands, and the Garden Route Districts in the Western Cape over the coming days.
100mm + Forecasted
Reports suggest that the 24-hour rainfall accumulation could exceed 100mm in certain areas, presenting dangers of extensive flooding that could imperil roads, bridges, properties (both formal and informal settlements), and even lives. Specifically, in Overberg, the prediction stands at a substantial 100 – 150mm of rain.
Coastline Level 6
Moreover, the coastline between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape will also be on high alert. An orange level 6 warning has been flagged for Sunday and Monday, indicating potential damaging winds.
This could lead to transport disruptions, property damage, and challenging driving conditions. This comes in the wake of last week's severe weather system that unfortunately resulted in at least two fatalities and considerable infrastructure damage along the coast.
