Music is more than just tunes and melodies. For Justin Serrao, it's a journey - a journey filled with hardships, heartbreak, and, above all, passion. As a strategic networker, an entrepreneur in the music business, and a live performer, Justin's story takes us through the highs and lows of carving out a niche in the music industry.
Rooted in Family
Growing up influenced by a charismatic uncle and his elder brother, Jayson, Justin's musical odyssey began on a chilly May morning, 32 years ago. Born to "Portu-kaans" parents, Justin’s early encounters with music revolved around watching his uncle's fingers dance on the guitar fretboard. At seven, without an instrument of his own, he followed his brother to music lessons, absorbing everything like a sponge.
First Strings and First Songs
The young artist transitioned to playing the bass guitar by age ten. Not long after, Justin and Jayson ventured into songwriting, culminating in their band, 74% Stupid. A cheeky reference to Jayson's math grade, the band saw a 13-year-old Justin take the center stage.
From Angst to Awakening
His teen years saw Justin join Grounded, performing at iconic venues and even signing with indie label Musketeer Records. However, two weeks before his final exams, the band's journey came to an abrupt halt. A stint as a roadie for rock group Wickhead in Los Angeles was followed by a brief hiatus, pushing Justin to rediscover his musical calling.
Reality Shows and Realizations
2011 brought Justin to the spotlight of Idols, where he forged a bond with winner David Van Vuuren. Although he didn't secure a win, the experience introduced him to renowned artists and honed his understanding of the music market.
Solo Sojourns and Strategic Shifts
2012 was a landmark year for Justin as he released his debut solo album, "Touching Toes Without Clothes." Funded by his guitar lessons, Justin's entrepreneurial spirit soon gave birth to 'Yoh Yoh Yoh Shows,' a promotional venture. The subsequent years were a mix of exhilaration and exhaustion, with Justin donning multiple hats - from promoter to performer.
Albums, Festivals, and Forward Momentum
Justin's second album, "Forget and Let Loose," in 2014 highlighted his evolution, both as a musician and an individual. The same year saw him venture into festival promotions with "Mo Rock." Collaborations with top artists and international tours enriched his musical palette, leading to albums like "Happy Saturday Morning Face" and "One Year Warning."
Embracing Country in 2021
Fast forwarding to 2021, Justin's passion for Country Music remains unwavering. As South Africa grows more receptive to the genre, Justin's fusion sound, combining the heart of country with the energy of rock, is being received with open arms. Always looking ahead, Justin's dedication to uplifting budding talent and pushing his own boundaries signifies a promising future, both for him and South African music. With a new album on the horizon, Justin Serrao's journey is far from over - it’s just getting started.
