A Nurtured Artist from Kempton Park
Born in Kempton Park – or as Schalk Bezuidenhout fondly dubs it, ‘The New York of the East Rand’ – his upbringing was deeply entrenched in the traditional Afrikaans way of life.
But even within this traditional milieu, Schalk's transformation was striking. His metamorphosis from a conservative Afrikaans caterpillar into a drama-filled butterfly, complete with a signature moustache and furry afro, was evident to all around him.
A Journey to Cape Town: From Rugby to Stand-up
Recognizing his dramatic flair early on, Schalk's parents sent him to pursue drama at the University of Cape Town. This move marked a significant transition in Schalk’s life. The vibrant city exposed him to worlds beyond rugby and 'boerewors'. His journey into stand-up comedy began in April 2011, offering a fresh and energetic flair on stage that resonated with audiences across diverse backgrounds.
An Accomplished Actor and Comedian
Apart from stand-up, Schalk's versatility as an artist is reflected in his roles in popular media. He's been seen in the hit Afrikaans TV series "Hotel", adding yet another feather to his cap. But his full name, Pieter Hendrik Schalk Bezuidenhout, born on 22 April 1992, holds stories of growth from his formative years in Kemptonpark, Gauteng. Following a successful academic stint at Hoërskool Jeugland, Schalk pursued a BA in Drama at the University of Cape Town, securing his honors degree cum laude in 2015.
Sinche his first paid Gig, which was in a strip club in Kempton Park, Schalk performed all over the world in great venues, and recently was the opening act with Trevor Noah.
Unique Touchpoints in Performance
Schalk's performances stand out due to their unique, creative touchpoints that allow audiences to identify and find humor, even in adverse situations.
During his university years, his increasing curiosity about societal constructs led him to choose comedy as his medium of expression, shedding light on quirky societal views in a humorous light.
His role as Johan Niemand in the 2018 film 'Kanarie', based on co-writer and music director Charl-Johan Lingenfelder’s experiences, further solidified his position as a thought leader in the entertainment industry.
Awards and Recognition
The talent and innovation Schalk brings to the comedy world have not gone unnoticed. In 2015, the Comic’s Choice Awards recognized him as the best in his peer group. His achievements continued with the 2018 kykNET television series, 'Die Ware Naarheid', where Schalk was not only a newsreader but also the text writer, sharing the screen with co-presenters Bibi Slippers and Erns Grundling.
Signature Style and Endearing Quirks
Schalk Bezuidenhout is unmistakably recognized by his colorful sweaters and curly hair. A symbol of embracing one’s unique identity, he is a testament to evolving beyond societal expectations, showcasing that roots, no matter how traditional, can always foster growth, transformation, and unbounded creativity.
Even his advertisements of products and services for different brands in South Africa is funny, and we love his Facebook Channel
