The North West School of Design (NWSD) in Klerksdorp has quietly but consistently carved out its space in South Africa’s fashion education landscape. Now, celebrating 25 years of training some of the country’s most well-known fashion professionals,including names like Gert-Johan Coetzee and Anel Botha,NWSD continues to evolve to meet the demands of an ever-changing industry.
New Direction in Fashion Education 🎨
After previously offering international certification through City & Guilds, NWSD took a new direction following changes in South African education policy in 2018. Rather than viewing this as a setback, the school saw an opportunity to align more closely with South Africa’s Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework (HEQSF).
Through detailed research and curriculum development, NWSD has submitted a brand new accredited 3-year fashion design course, alongside two additional one-year full-time programmes, all launched in January 2023.
These programmes combine hands-on skill-building with theoretical foundations,focusing on both the creative and business sides of fashion.
Accredited by the British Accreditation Council ✅
In a major step towards global recognition, NWSD is now accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC) as an International Centre. This came after an extensive review and inspection process, ensuring the school meets international standards in teaching, learning, and educational quality assurance.
The BAC is recognised worldwide and is also a member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA)—giving NWSD graduates a valuable edge in the global fashion market.
