Fishy business at Lekwena Private Game Reserve
The North-West University’s Water Research Group, in partnership with Nature-I-Am and Lekwena Kids Club, is inviting kids aged 4 to 12 to dive into the world of freshwater fish at Fish Day, taking place on Saturday, 12 April 2025, from 09:00 to 11:30 at Lekwena Private Game Reserve – Plaaskombuis, just 11km outside Potchefstroom on the N12 towards Joburg.
The day is organised by NWU’s School of Biological Sciences and the Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management, with support from the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences. It’s not just about splashing around — this is about teaching children about the fish that call South African rivers and dams home.
What’s the catch?
It’s free. Yes, gratis. But before anyone gets too excited and rocks up with the whole family, RSVP is essential by 9 April. Trudie is the go-to person for that: 082 459 7702, or drop her a WhatsApp. You can also email info@natureiam.co.za for queries or more info.
Activities: Not your average school outing
Once signed in, kids will be grouped by grade and led through a series of activities that blend education with play. Each child will receive a goodie bag, and by the end of the morning, they’ll walk away with some fish facts, new friends, a badge, and possibly a new appreciation for gills and fins.
The little ones will:
Learn what fish are and where they fit in nature
Take part in fun games
Receive a goodie bag
Collect a badge
And yes, earn some proper bragging rights
And the adults?
Parents are more than welcome to stick around — there’s a lekker breakfast to enjoy while the kids do their thing. Or, if you’re the curious type, join in and learn a bit about fish migration too. No judgement.
