A drop-goal after the hooter by Ireland replacement back Ciaran Frawley saw the visitors snatch a dramatic 25-24 win over the Springboks at Kings Park in Durban on Saturday.
Match Recap:
First Half: Ireland dominated, leading 16-6 with a try from scrumhalf Conor Murray, a conversion, and four penalties by flyhalf Jack Crowley.
Second Half: The Springboks mounted a spirited comeback with Handre Pollard scoring all of South Africa's points through eight penalties.
Dramatic Finish: Despite leading 24-19 late in the game, two late drop goals from Frawley sealed the win for Ireland, stunning the Kings Park crowd into silence.
Rassie Erasmus reflected on the match, acknowledging the impact of Willie le Roux's early injury but praising the performance of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Erasmus remarked, “Our main concern was that first half. We fought back from a long way at half time and converted when we had to, but in that last minute, they were better than us.”
Captain Siya Kolisi added, “I’m really enjoying the way coach Tony is getting the team to attack as a group... We’re going to get better each week.”
Looking Ahead:
The Springboks are next in action against Portugal in a historic first Test between the nations.
Rassie Erasmus has confirmed significant changes for the next game, stating that a very different team will be selected. The current squad has been informed of the new lineup internally. The players from Saturday's match will aid in the preparations until Wednesday before taking a well-deserved 10-day break.
Erasmus mentioned, “We will bring in a few new players and see if they can replicate the performance that Sacha delivered today.”
