Potchefstroom, a vibrant city in South Africa, offers a unique and exhilarating experience for those interested in equestrian sports and archery: the Mounted Archery Association of South Africa (MAASA).
This sport combines the skills of horseback riding and archery, presenting an exciting challenge for both beginners and experienced riders.
What is Mounted Archery?
Mounted Archery is a historical practice that has evolved into a modern sport. Across the globe, various styles and variations are practiced, each with its own rules and layouts. However, the core principles of skill, precision, and synergy between rider and horse remain constant.
The Hungarian Style
In this style, riders aim at circular targets placed 2 meters above the ground, each with a 30cm diameter bull's eye. The course is divided into three 30m sections, and riders must shoot at least one arrow into each target while cantering. The challenge must be completed within 18 seconds, testing both speed and accuracy.
The Korean Style
The Korean style is more complex, involving multiple disciplines. In South Africa, this style uses 34cm² square targets. Arrows must be carried in a quiver or belt, not in the hand. The course is 160m long with a left turn, featuring five targets spaced 30m apart. Riders have a maximum of 35 seconds to complete the course at a canter.
The Turkish Style
This style incorporates two targets: one on the ground and another hung on a 7m pole. Using blunt arrows, riders are challenged by both the positioning of the targets and a strict time limit.
