Lecturer / Junior Lecturer

Experience Needed:

Minimum requirements LECTURER · A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Physics or Physics Education. · A minimum of three (3) years’ teaching experience at a higher educational level. JUNIOR LECTURER · An honours degree (NQF level 8) in Physics or Physics Education. · A minimum of one (1) year teaching experience at a higher educational level. ADDED ADVANTAGES · A PhD (NQF Level 10) in Physics or Physics Education. · Membership with the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP).

Requirements:

FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS) · Ability to teach (theory and practical) in front of large classes using prescribed lab equipment. · Good understanding of basic physics principles and the scientific method. · Excellent computer skills. · Demonstrable language proficiency. · Knowledge of the higher education landscape. BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES · Sound interpersonal relationship skills · Excellent communication skills · Team-oriented and reliable · Willing to take on administrative and leadership duties

Duties Include:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching and Learning · Take charge of every aspect of the practical component of all first-year classes, including teaching large classes, marking, and bookkeeping, etc. · Make sure the experimental equipment and lab venue is in good condition and ready for class. · Be innovative in creating new practical experiments and maintain the current practical manual. · Assist the first-year theory lecturers with their weekly tutorials, as well as help them mark the theory class tests and exams. Management · Manage and appoint student assistants throughout the year, for all undergraduate physics modules. · In consultation with other lecturers, create a schedule for the student assistants, assign them to various tasks where help is needed, and keep track of the hours they work. · Assist the students in their declaration of interest, claiming process and other relevant paperwork. Community Engagement · Participate in community engagement projects, faculty open days, etc. Research and Innovation · Up to 20% of your time, negotiable, within the Centre for Space Research area of expertise and/or in physics / science education.
