Lecturer (Registered Medical Biological Scientist - Human Genetics)
Experience Needed:
Minimum requirements
· Master’s in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a related field.
· HPCSA registration as a Medical Biological Scientist in Human Genetics (or a portfolio of evidence ready for submission). Please clearly indicate your HPCSA registration number on your CV.
· Minimum of three (3) years’ laboratory analysis experience.
· Candidates registered with the HPCSA within the last five years must submit their HPCSA portfolio of evidence with their application.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Interpretation of genetic/genomic test results in compliance with laboratory protocols and regulatory standards.
· Participation in quality control and assurance programs to maintain laboratory accreditation.
· Staying updated on advancements in genetic testing methodologies and contributing to research and development projects.
· Assisting in the training and mentorship of junior staff, students, and healthcare professionals.
· Supervising postgraduate students in research projects.
· Managing laboratory operations, including sample analysis, bioinformatics, and laboratory information systems.
· Proficiency in molecular and genetic methods, including triage and result interpretation.
· Effective collaboration with clinicians and other healthcare professionals.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Centre for Human Metabolomics (CHM) is a leading research and diagnostic laboratory dedicated to excellence in patient care, research, and education. Our state-of-the-art facilities and expert team provide cutting-edge diagnostic services for inherited metabolic diseases while advancing the fields of metabolomics, genomics, and molecular research.
We are seeking a highly motivated HPCSA-registered Medical Biological Scientist – Human Genetics to join our team. The successful candidate will play a key role in integrating genomics and genetic testing into CHM’s research and diagnostic services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Result Interpretation & Reporting
· Analyze and interpret genetic and genomic test results and provide clinical reports as per laboratory and international standards.
Method Development & Quality Assurance
· Contribute to the development & validation of new methods.
· Participate in quality assurance and accreditation in line with ISO 15189 standards.
Laboratory Operations
· Perform laboratory analyses, including sample reception, logging, processing, and quality assurance.
Laboratory Maintenance & Inventory Management
· Ensure proper maintenance of laboratory equipment and efficient inventory management.
Continuous Professional Development & Compliance
· Maintain HPCSA registration through ongoing professional development and training.
Leadership, Academic Support & Supervision
· Participate in in the CHM training program and post graduate student guidance.
· Attend and represent CHM at national and international conferences, seminars, and professional meetings.
Other Duties
· Perform ad hoc tasks as directed by management.

REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
