Coffee and Potchefstroom are synonymous, so we know that this International Coffee Day will be well celebrated within our community.

Launched in 2015 and celebrated on 1 October, International Coffee Day promotes and celebrates surely one of the most beloved hot beverages in the world, although these days there seems to be an increase in its cold cousin’s popularity. Iced coffee is creeping its way up the ladder and is a strong contender for the most consumed beverage.
Coffee, stat. I mean, coffee stats.
Let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like a steaming cup of coffee in the morning - whether you fancy a Flat White or opt for the stronger Espresso or even just a good cup of instant coffee, to some it’s the perfect (or only) way to start your day. In our beloved South Africa, two-thirds of the adult population drink coffee on a daily basis - that’s approximately 21.7 million people. That’s a lot of coffee mugs! And on a larger scale, over 2.25 billion people enjoy a cup of Joe each and every day.
According to further statistics, 2023 saw more than 1.4 billion litres of iced coffee consumed globally! The demography for this cold beverage is mostly Millennials and Gen Z, as these two groups tend to grab a ‘little treat’ at least once a week.

Pick your poison
There is no shortage of coffee shops in Potchefstroom, so coffee lovers need not be alarmed when deciding on where to celebrate this International Coffee Day. With a new café opening its doors nearly every six months, the choices are endless. Coffee enthusiasts can enjoy their favourite hot (or cold) beverage at one of the MANY following spots:
deMilko
Platō Coffee
Padlangs Koffiestop
Kukua Coffee
Cuppa Café
All Rise Coffee Court
Vida e Caffé
Seattle Coffee
Pavement Special Coffee Co.
Brayat
Die Akker Koffiehuis
Recharge Coffee
SLOUW Café
Die Pienk Huis
Black Orchid Café
Toro
Central Perk Coffee
Bootleggers
Mugg & Bean
Blank Canvas Café
Loop Straat Bakery

Not to mention the hidden gems like Espresso Carwash, where you can enjoy a really good cup of coffee while you wait for your car to be washed (we heard that their American Fudge coffee is a showstopper). And although it's not coffee, you absolutely have to try the hot chocolate from the Shell Garage across from The Broken Pot. Unfortunately, we bid farewell to Hooked Coffee Co., but not to worry, a new, exciting coffee spot is opening in its place…because, why not? Keep an eye out for Surf & Turf Coffee opening soon at the Baillie Park Spar shopping centre.

Whether you’re a hazelnut iced coffee guy or a double shot espresso girl, one thing is for certain - Potch has got your caffeine fix covered this International Coffee Day. So, go out there, drink the coffee, and do the things.
