Tomorrow, April 1, 2026, marks a milestone that very few reach and even fewer navigate with such enduring spirit. Peggy Haagner, a lifelong resident of Potchefstroom, will celebrate her 100th birthday at the Potchefstroom Dienssentrum, surrounded by the echoes of a century well-lived.
Born in 1926, into a world that felt much larger and moved much slower, Peggy’s life has been a front-row seat to the most transformative century in human history. From the challenges of the Great Depression to the moon landing and the digital revolution, she has remained a steady, resilient presence in the community she calls home.

A Journey Through Time
Peggy’s story is inextricably linked to the soil of Potchefstroom. She grew up here, attending Girls High, a period she still recalls as one of her fondest memories. "School was quite a milestone," she reflected during a pre-birthday celebration at the Dienssentrum.
Her life has been defined by the eras she survived and thrived in:
The 1930s: Learning the value of strength during the hardship of the Great Depression.
The 1940s: Witnessing the courage and sacrifice of World War II.
The 1994 Transition: Welcoming a new South Africa with a heart full of hope and freedom.

The Secret to Longevity?
While many look for complex secrets to reaching 100, Peggy’s outlook remains delightfully simple and sweet, literally. When asked what she would choose to eat for the next ten years, her answer was immediate and brought a smile to everyone in the room:
"I like sweet things. Like cake, and sweets, and chocolate!"
It seems fitting, then, that her early celebrations featured a beautiful pink-and-chocolate cake emblazoned with "100 Peggy," shared with friends, family, and the staff at the Dienssentrum who have come to cherish her wisdom and wit.
A Beautiful Life
Today, Peggy is a symbol of resilience and togetherness. Whether she is completing a complex puzzle or sharing stories with her family, she radiates a sense of peace that only comes from ten decades of experience.
As she officially joins the elite rank of centenarians tomorrow, the community of Potchefstroom honors her not just for the years in her life, but for the life in her years.
Happy 100th Birthday, Peggy Haagner! May your day be as sweet as the chocolates you love.
