As the clock struck midnight and the calendar turned to 2026, the team at PAWS Haven didn't celebrate with parties; they celebrated with action. The first two weeks of the year have been a whirlwind of bravery, community spirit, and life-changing milestones for animals in Potchefstroom.

Heroic Rescues Amidst the Fireworks
The year began under the shadow of distress caused by holiday fireworks. Annelize, Willem, and a dedicated team of volunteers patrolled the streets from New Year's Eve through the early hours of the morning to rescue terrified pets that had fled their yards.
Among the many rescues that night:
The Oil-Covered Soul: Found on Gerrit Dekker Street, a severely malnourished and terrified Mixed Pitbull was discovered covered in black motor oil. At 1:30 AM, volunteers gently bathed him, washing away both the grime and his fear. By morning, his tail was wagging and he was ready to play.
The N12 Survivors: Several dogs, including a Beagle and a Collie cross, were found safe and brought to the haven after wandering as far as the N12 highway.
The Emergency Rescue: A dog hit by a car after being startled by fireworks was immediately picked up by the PAWS Haven team and provided with life-saving care.
The bravery wasn't limited to the roads. Officer Harriette Aucamp recently went above and beyond, climbing into a drain in Meul Street to rescue a frightened, trapped kitten.

A Wave of Successful Adoptions
The "Pawsome Pit Crew" and many other residents have started 2026 in the best way possible—finding their forever homes.
Sibling Bonds: Two kittens were kept together when their new owner, Chantel, decided to adopt both brother and sister.
The Husky’s Hope: Shadow, a beautiful Siberian Husky, ended his wait for a family who truly understands his loyal spirit.
Dachshund Delights: Both Ella (Lady) and Penny found homes where they can rule the roost—Penny specifically winning over her new mom, Marina, with her "look-at-me" eyes.
Feline Friends: Oreo, Ashley, and the once-shy Shelly the Siamese all transitioned from kennel life to warm couches. Carla, a resident since May 2025, also finally found her perfect match.
Tuxedo Birthday: A handsome black-and-white kitten was adopted by Cisca and Mieke, serving as a very special 16th birthday present for Mieke.

Community Spirit: The Renovation Project
PAWS Haven is looking forward to more than just adoptions this year; they are building for the future. Build It Potchefstroom kickstarted the PAWS Haven Renovation Project with a generous donation of tiles, cement, and bonding liquid for the first 20 square meters of flooring.
However, the summer heat remains a challenge. The shelter has issued an urgent appeal for a misting/irrigation system to be installed on the kennel roofs to keep the residents cool during the extreme heat.

A Rural Rescue Story
In a touching display of local collaboration, PAWS Haven recently responded to a call regarding an injured foal. Recognizing that the foal needed its mother to survive, Tokkie (PAWS Officer), Dr. Gerber (Veterinarian), and Hansie and Zaneta from Tip Top Kennels worked together to rescue both the foal and the mare. Vicky from the Potch Equestrian Club provided a camp and feed, ensuring the pair stayed together under 24-hour observation.
How You Can Help
The PAWS Haven family extends their deepest gratitude to every volunteer and donor who has supported them during these first 15 days of 2026. As they continue their work, they invite the public to join them in their renovation efforts or by contributing to their "Besproeing" (Irrigation) fund.
