Major Road Closures Ahead of Potchefstroom’s Premier Running Event
Residents and motorists across the greater Potchefstroom area are being advised to take note of significant road closures and traffic restrictions as the city prepares to host the annual Letsgo Potch Marathon 2025 on Saturday, 25 October 2025.

Now recognised as one of the largest road-running events in the region, the Letsgo Potch Marathon will start and finish at CID Cachet Park. The race is expected to attract more than 2,000 participants from across South Africa, drawing both elite athletes and recreational runners to the city.
The event will serve as a showcase of Potchefstroom’s growing reputation as a hub for athletics and community engagement. However, with large crowds and extensive route coverage, temporary road closures have been put in place to ensure the safety of both runners and residents.
Friday Evening Preparations and Initial Closures
To facilitate final route preparations and race setup, several streets will be closed to all traffic on the evening before the marathon.
Full Closures — Friday, 24 October 2025 (18:00 – 00:00):
Hoffman Street (between Meyer & Esselen)
Borchers Street (between Hoffman & Steve Biko)
Esselen Street (between Malherbe & Steve Biko)
These closures will allow organisers and traffic marshals to set up barricades, signage, and safety zones along key sections of the route. Motorists are encouraged to make alternative arrangements during this period, particularly around the Cachet Park precinct and adjacent areas.

Race Day Closures and Restrictions
The main marathon will take place on Saturday, 25 October 2025, and multiple streets throughout central and northern Potchefstroom will be affected. Road users are urged to plan their travel accordingly, as several major intersections will be closed from the early hours of the morning.

While some roads will reopen after the morning race sessions conclude, early travel within these zones is discouraged. Marshals and officers will be stationed at key intersections to assist residents and manage diversions.
Public Safety and Coordination
Event marshals and law enforcement teams will be deployed along the route to monitor intersections, direct traffic, and maintain safety for both athletes and the general public. Organisers have emphasised the importance of community cooperation in ensuring that emergency access and controlled movement are maintained throughout the event.
Residents living near the affected areas are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during closure periods and to park vehicles outside of restricted streets if travel is required on the day. Deliveries, public transport, and service vehicles will operate under controlled conditions to minimise disruptions.
Motorists using the open routes, particularly Calderbank and Silver Street, are urged to exercise caution, keep speeds low, and remain alert to road signage and instructions from marshals.

Community and Economic Impact
Beyond being a sporting event, the Letsgo Potch Marathon has grown into an important economic and social occasion for the city. Each year, the marathon draws thousands of visitors who contribute to the local tourism and hospitality sectors, benefiting restaurants, hotels, and small businesses across Potchefstroom.
For residents, the event represents an opportunity to come together in support of athletes while showcasing the warmth and spirit of the community. Spectators are encouraged to gather along the race route and cheer participants on, creating an atmosphere of celebration and encouragement that reflects the city’s unity and pride.
Commitment to a Safe and Successful Marathon
Organisers of the Letsgo Potch Marathon have thanked the Potchefstroom community for their continued support and understanding. In a statement, the coordination team noted that these temporary restrictions are a necessary measure to safeguard both runners and residents.
“Every successful marathon is built on community cooperation,” said a representative from the Letsgo Potch team. “We appreciate the patience of local residents and encourage everyone to embrace the event, whether by volunteering, spectating, or simply planning ahead to minimise inconvenience.”
The marathon’s emphasis on organisation, safety, and inclusivity continues to strengthen its reputation as one of South Africa’s standout running events.

Looking Ahead: Potchefstroom as a Sporting Destination
As Potchefstroom continues to host large-scale athletic and cultural events, the city’s infrastructure and community readiness remain key to its success. The Letsgo Potch Marathon serves as an example of how sports can unite people, inspire healthy lifestyles, and promote local pride.
The event also reflects the growing partnership between municipal authorities, private sponsors, and local volunteers, a collaboration that reinforces the city’s vision of becoming a preferred destination for national sporting events.
With road closures clearly outlined and safety measures firmly in place, the Letsgo Potch Marathon 2025 is set to deliver another successful showcase of endurance, community spirit, and Potchefstroom’s signature hospitality.
