The Free State town of Parys is set to host the EXP Africa Adventure Weekend on 16 May 2026. Based at Stonehenge in Africa on Kopjeskraal Road, the event offers a mix of trail running, mountain biking, and river crossings. Unlike a standard marathon or cycle race, this format requires teams to navigate an unmarked course using only printed maps and landmarks.
The Disciplines and Distances
Participants can choose between three distances: 25km, 60km, or the flagship 120km route. Each course involves more than just pedalling or running; teams will need to tackle trekking on foot, kayaking, and a zip line. There is also a "surprise activity" planned for the day to keep competitors on their toes.
The 60km route carries extra weight for younger athletes, as it forms part of the EXP Africa School Series. Students competing in this bracket can earn points toward the national EXP Africa Championship title.
Teamwork and Navigation
Adventure racing is a team-orientated sport. Entries are open for pairs or teams of four, and the rules are straightforward: teammates must remain within sight and earshot of one another at all times. Because the course is not marked with tape or arrows, teams rely on topographical maps to find their way between checkpoints.
Success usually depends as much on team dynamics and navigational skill as it does on physical fitness. The first team to visit every control point and cross the finish line together is declared the winner.
