On Saturday, 17 May 2025, ARTi Gallery in Flamwood, Klerksdorp is set to host a three-hour masterclass by renowned South African sketch artist Andre Austin. For those who’ve always wanted their drawings to pop off the page, without the use of special effects or 3D glasses, this might be your shot.
Drawing Depth, Not Just Doodles
The session promises to demystify the art of creating depth with nothing more than pencil, paper, and some solid advice from a guy who knows what he's doing. Participants will learn how to make their work look like it’s got substance, not just lines, by working from dark to light, literally and figuratively. If you’ve been shading like it’s still primary school, here’s your opportunity to fix that.
Strictly Limited Seats
It’s not a stadium event, and Austin’s not about to start shouting tips from a stage. There are only 10 seats up for grabs at R400 a head, making this a pretty intimate gathering. The event runs from 12:00 to 15:00, and drinks will be on hand to keep pencils steady.
Booking is as easy as picking up your phone and dialling 083-326-1031.
From Workshop to Wine
As if spending your afternoon sharpening your artistic skills wasn’t enough, the day wraps up with an exhibition featuring the works of Andre Austin, alongside Robert and Anni Thirtle. That kicks off at 16:00, with snacks and wine in the mix, because nothing says “cultured” like appreciating art with a glass of red in hand.
