A Season to Remember
The curtain has come down on another thrilling Varsity Football season, and while UFS lifted the trophy, the spotlight fell firmly on NWU Eagles captain Aphelele Sibisi, who was voted the FNB Player of the Tournament 2025. The award, decided through a combination of coaches’ nominations and fan votes, recognises not only Sibisi’s commanding performances but also his leadership and influence on and off the pitch.

In addition to the prestigious title, Sibisi walked away with a R10 000 cheque courtesy of FNB eWallet and the keys to a Hertz-sponsored Suzuki Swift, a prize that underlines the magnitude of his achievement.
The Leader at the Back
As captain, Sibisi was the heartbeat of the NWU Eagles throughout the campaign. His defensive composure, ability to read the game, and vocal leadership kept his side organised during tense battles. Beyond his own skillset, his presence inspired his teammates to raise their levels, particularly in high-pressure matches.
NWU’s run to the semi-finals owed much to Sibisi’s consistency. Whether it was commanding clearances, crucial interceptions, or rallying his team after setbacks, he embodied the resilience of the Eagles. Even in defeat, his determination never wavered.
Recognition From Peers and Fans
What makes the award even more special is that it reflects both peer respect and public admiration. Each Varsity Football head coach put forward nominees based on consistent excellence, with Sibisi earning multiple votes. When the shortlist was revealed, fans responded in force, voting passionately and propelling him into pole position.
In the final tally, Sibisi edged out Jarome Jansen (UFS) and Omphemetse Athibeng (UFS) to claim the crown, with his popularity underscoring how widely his performances were appreciated across the tournament.
Beyond the Field
Off the pitch, Sibisi is known for his humility and drive to succeed. “I have a personal need to show how far I can go, and that starts with giving everything for this team,” he said earlier in the season. That mindset has not only made him a role model at NWU but also an inspiration for young footballers in Mahikeng and beyond.
His award represents more than individual brilliance, it is also a reflection of NWU’s proud football culture, where players are nurtured to combine academics with sporting excellence.
Looking Forward
For Sibisi, this accolade may be just the beginning. With his leadership qualities, technical skill, and discipline, he has the attributes to push towards professional football while continuing to inspire his peers. For NWU, his legacy in Varsity Football is already cemented, but his journey promises even greater milestones ahead.
As the 2025 Varsity Football season fades into history, one thing is certain: Aphelele Sibisi has left an indelible mark, earning his place among the tournament’s greats.
