Carletonville Mother Arrested for Alleged Poisoning of Daughter

Authorities in Carletonville confirmed the arrest of a 25-year-old mother accused of deliberately poisoning herself and her one-year-old daughter earlier this month. The child tragically died following the incident, initially suspected to be food poisoning from a local takeaway. Subsequent investigations revealed deliberate poisoning, leading to the woman’s arrest on September 19.

She appeared briefly in the Oberholzer Magistrate’s Court on September 22 and faces charges related to the murder of her child. The case has shocked the community, raising concerns about child safety and the importance of mental health interventions.

Courier Driver Hijacked near Welverdiend

A RAM Couriers driver was the victim of an armed hijacking near Welverdiend on September 15. Armed suspects in a black BMW forced the courier van off the road before threatening the driver at gunpoint and transferring parcels into their vehicle. Stolen items included jewellery and mobile phones.

Although the driver was left unharmed, police have opened an investigation. The incident adds to growing concerns over the targeting of delivery vehicles in semi-rural areas.

Domestic Worker Tied Up During Oberholzer Robbery

On September 15, a domestic worker in Oberholzer endured a frightening ordeal after three men broke into her employer’s Banfield Street residence. She attempted to escape but was tied up by the suspects, who then stole valuables including electronics and appliances.

Although the victim was physically unharmed, the robbery left her shaken. Police investigations continue.

Fochville Police Station’s Victim Friendly Room Recognised

The Victim Friendly Room (VFR) at Fochville Police Station was honoured at the 2025 Vita Basadi Awards, earning the Guardian Award runner-up position. Staffed by Sergeant Refiloe Queen Madelisa, an auxiliary social worker, and four victim supporters, the VFR provides counselling, case follow-up, and legal guidance to victims of crime.

Beyond in-station support, the team runs community outreach initiatives addressing gender-based violence, drug abuse, and child neglect, while also distributing essential goods to vulnerable residents. The award highlights the role of police-community partnerships in promoting safety and compassion.

Police are investigating cases of kidnapping and extortion, with appeals made to the public to provide any information that could assist.

Fochville Residents Take Development Into Their Own Hands

While Carletonville grappled with crime and tragedy, Fochville residents showcased resilience through the Our Town Fochville initiative. Launched by Jan and Hannelie Schoonraad, the cooperative has already completed projects such as repainting speed bumps, hosting a fundraising fun run, repairing over 400 potholes, and removing more than 800 bags of litter.

The group, which operates without municipal support, aims to establish Fochville as a safe, self-sustaining town. Plans include the revitalisation of the Piet Viljoen Park, pending municipal approval. Residents are encouraged to join or donate to the cause.

Youth Gymnasts Head to National Championships

Losberg Gymnastics in Fochville has reason to celebrate as seven young athletes prepare for the South African National Gymnastics Championships in Pretoria, taking place from October 2 to 9. Club owner and coach JJ Strydom expressed pride in the group, highlighting their dedication and achievements in qualifying competitions.

The selected gymnasts, aged between 11 and 15, represent a promising future for local sports and have already drawn attention for their talent and discipline.

Blockbusters Carletonville Closes After 37 Years

Carletonville bids farewell to a cultural institution as Blockbusters, the last remaining video rental store in South Africa, closes its doors after nearly four decades. Founded by Carlos Rebelo in 1988, the store became a community hub for entertainment but could no longer withstand the pressures of online streaming and commercial demand for the shop’s space.

Residents expressed sadness at the closure, sharing memories of childhood visits and family traditions tied to the store. The building will soon house a new pharmacy.
