May 2026 has been a month of stark contrasts, defined by the unwavering resilience of our residents in the face of infrastructure decay and a series of tragic events that have shaken our close-knit community. From the sports fields of Fochville to the mining shafts of Mponeng, this digest brings you the essential stories that shaped our region over the past few weeks, ensuring you stay informed on the issues that matter most to our local life.

Crime and Public Safety | Ongoing security concerns in Leeupoort and Blyvooruitzicht
The region faced a challenging month with several violent incidents and ongoing investigations.
Tragic End to Farm Attack: Mr. Danie Moolman, a farmer from the Leeupoort area, passed away at Leratong Hospital on May 1. He had been battling injuries sustained during a violent farm attack on March 24, during which he and his son were shot.
Taxi Violence: On May 3, the Carletonville United Taxi Association (CUTA) lost a 30-year-old marshal, Fundikuhle Zungu. He was shot multiple times near the Khutsong Extension 5 bridge. The SAPS special taxi violence unit is investigating.
Murder Investigations: * In Blyvooruitzicht, police are investigating a murder following a domestic dispute where a man was allegedly stabbed with a broken bottle.
What was initially reported as a pedestrian accident near the Carletonville Taxi Rank was reclassified as murder after investigators discovered the deceased had suffered chest stab wounds.
Armed Robbery: Four masked suspects raided Blue Bell Wholesalers in Platinum Street on April 29. They overpowered a guard and used grinding equipment to loot the store’s safe.
Highway Hijacking: A 40-year-old driver was forced off the R500 near Rooipoort School by armed men in two Toyota Yaris vehicles. The victim was later dumped in Evaton.

Infrastructure and Municipal Concerns | Sinkhole expansion and the Khutsong housing crisis
Residents continue to voice frustration over deteriorating living conditions and delayed municipal responses.
Sinkhole Crisis: * A sinkhole at the Khutsong Reservoir (an R80m project) has grown significantly, now measuring four to five times its original size.
On the R500 near the Goudvlakte turn-off, expanding sinkholes have swallowed road signs; the road remains closed with vehicles diverted to gravel bypasses.
In Khutsong South, a sinkhole has begun damaging a concrete fence and threatens a stormwater canal.
Housing and Sewage: * Homeowners in Khutsong Ext 5 and 6 report being "trapped" in new homes due to faulty doors, leaking pipes, and substandard construction.
In Fochville, raw sewage has been streaming down Danie Theron Street for over a year, causing road damage and health concerns.
Asbestos Health Risks: The One Merafong Organisation (OMO) has initiated a legal class action against the government, demanding the removal of hazardous asbestos roofing in Khutsong and Kokosi.
Public Safety Hazard: A local councillor, Tollie Lubbe (74), suffered a broken arm and leg after falling into a 1.3-meter-deep "hidden hole" obscured by grass in Welverdiend.

Community and Education | Youth development and a milestone centenary celebration
Despite the hardships, local organizations and schools have shown remarkable spirit.
Youth Outreach: Law enforcement and parolees visited Wedela Technical High School to share "real-life" stories of prison life, encouraging over 500 learners to focus on education.
Celebrating Longevity: Ouma Febie Scholtz celebrated her 100th birthday at the Fochville Aftree-oord on April 29. She was honored for her decades of contribution as a seamstress and community pillar.
Support Initiatives:
The Carletonville Round Table raised funds via a boerewors roll project to provide "food socks" to the elderly in Welverdiend.

The Fight St-skopboksklub excelled at the national championships in Oudtshoorn, with several fighters qualifying for the world championships in Italy.
Local MMA fighters representing Gauteng brought home a haul of gold and silver medals from the national championships in Vanderbijlpark.
Mother’s Day Fun: Losberg Gymnastics hosted a "Mommy & Me" competition where parents and gymnasts swapped roles for a day of lighthearted judging.

Health and Economic News | Mining tragedy and urgent veterinary warnings
Mining Updates: DRDGOLD reported strong quarterly growth, but tragedy struck at Harmony Gold’s Mponeng mine on May 24, where two workers died in a shaft engineering-related accident.
Veterinary Alert: Local vets and the SPCA have issued an urgent warning regarding a Feline Panleukopenia outbreak. The deadly virus has a 90% mortality rate in kittens.
Employment Scam: The Gauteng Department of Health warned residents about fake job offers circulating on WhatsApp, falsely claiming to be from West Rand District Health Services.
Final thought of the pen
As we close the chapter on May 2026, it is evident that while Carletonville and its surrounding areas face systemic challenges with infrastructure and safety, the spirit of "Ubuntu" remains alive. The successes of our youth in sports and the tireless work of local non-profits provide a beacon of hope against the backdrop of municipal neglect. We urge all residents to remain vigilant regarding health alerts and safety hazards.
We will continue to monitor the progress of the sinkhole repairs and the OMO legal action as we move into the winter months. Stay safe, stay connected, and continue to support our local community initiatives.
