The first half of March 2026 has been marked by a somber atmosphere following a tragic incident at a local school, but the community has also found reasons to celebrate through remarkable individual achievements and a milestone birthday for a local matriarch.

1. Tragedy: The Badirile Secondary Stabbing
The community was plunged into mourning on 12 March 2026 following a fatal incident at Badirile Secondary School in Khutsong.
The Incident: A 16-year-old Grade 9 learner was allegedly stabbed by a 17-year-old Grade 10 learner on school grounds during a morning altercation. Despite being rushed to a medical facility, the victim succumbed to his injuries.
The Investigation: The SAPS have launched a formal murder investigation. Simultaneously, the school has initiated internal disciplinary proceedings against the perpetrator.
GDE Response: Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed "deep devastation," dispatching a Psychosocial Support Unit to the school today, 13 March, to assist traumatized learners and staff.
2. Water Crisis: Reservoirs at Critical Lows
The first two weeks of March saw the most severe water restrictions of the year so far.
The Levels: As of 5 March, the municipality’s water system was operating at only 37.5% capacity. The Fochville 5ML Reservoir was reported as completely empty (0%), while the Blybank Reservoir also hit zero.
The Causes: A combination of low inlet pressure from Rand Water (currently between $1.5 \text{ and } 2 \text{ bar}$) and a massive R1.4 billion debt has led to severe throttling.
National Day of Action: On 11 March, the Democratic Alliance (DA) held a picket at the entrance of Carletonville. Mayoral Candidate Carlos Rebelo led an oversight visit to the 007 Reservoir, which remains out of operation due to sinkholes, with rehabilitation now delayed until June 2026.
Sinkhole Frustrations: Residents in Umkumaas Street expressed renewed outrage on 11 March as a major sinkhole remains unrehabilitated after four years, continuing to block a cul-de-sac and devalue surrounding properties.
3. Sports: The Road to the Nationals
Amidst the town's struggles, the local youth are proving their mettle on the national stage.
Track & Field Stars: On 12 March, it was confirmed that Mikayla Smit (Hoërskool Carletonville) and Sibusiso Ndiko have officially qualified for the National High Schools Track & Field Championships.
Record Breakers: Mikayla Smit recently smashed a 27-year-old 200m record for U17 girls at the D2 championships, while Sibusiso Ndiko secured gold in both the 200m and long jump.
Fochville "Blougolf": Athletes from Hoërskool Fochville delivered a standout performance at the Gauteng Athletics meeting in Germiston, with several runners securing personal bests in middle-distance events.
Blind Soccer Success: On 11 March, the region celebrated as the Corinthians FC prepared to defend their title following a historic blind soccer finale in Johannesburg.
Provincial Trials: These athletes, alongside others from the Smithathlons Athletics Club, are set to represent Merafong at the Gauteng Championships at Germiston Stadium this weekend, 14-15 March.

4. Community & Human Interest
A Century of Wisdom: On 5 March, a beloved Khutsong "Gogo" celebrated her 100th birthday. The Khutsong CPF honored her with a celebratory visit and gift hamper, recognizing her as a living library of the town's history.
The Dream Takeoff: On 12 March, a 14-year-old local teen fulfilled a lifelong dream with a surprise tandem skydive at the Johannesburg Skydiving Club, a story that went viral on local social media groups.
Cultural Arts: The production Blacksmith completed a successful run at the Carletonville Sports Complex on 8 March, showcasing local drama talent.
New Youth Movement: On 9 March, the "Unknown Society" youth movement officially launched in Khutsong, aiming to provide a creative outlet and support system for local teenagers.
5. Law Enforcement & Safety
Sangoma Arrested: On 12 March, police arrested a local sangoma accused of sexually assaulting two minors, a case that has sparked calls for greater community vigilance.
Elijah Barayi Pickets: Residents of the Elijah Barayi housing complex held a small demonstration on 10 March regarding the lack of functional streetlights, which they claim is facilitating a rise in late-night muggings.
Violent Robbery: On 6 March, a couple in Carletonville was tied up during a violent early-morning home invasion. The suspects fled with various household items; police are currently following leads.
