Merafong City Local Municipality has officially announced the temporary closure of its Carletonville Traffic Department to facilitate essential renovations. The closure, which commenced today, Monday, 04 May 2026, is scheduled to last through the work week, with the facility expected to remain shuttered until Friday, 08 May 2026. This move is part of a broader municipal effort to modernize local infrastructure and improve the overall efficiency of service delivery for residents.
According to the public notice issued by the Municipal Manager, Dumisani D. Mabuza, the department is slated to resume its standard operations on Monday, 11 May 2026. During this five-day hiatus, the municipality has advised the public to redirect all traffic-related inquiries and service needs, such as licensing and registrations, to the nearby Fochville Traffic Department. This temporary shift ensures that essential administrative functions remain available to the community while the Carletonville site undergoes its scheduled improvements.

Infrastructure and Financial Context in Merafong City
The renovation of the Carletonville facility arrives at a critical juncture for the municipality. Earlier this year, reports indicated that Merafong City has been navigating a complex financial landscape, characterized by a revenue shortfall and a subsequent revision of its service delivery plans. Despite these challenges, the local government has prioritized specific "self-funded" infrastructure projects.
The Traffic Department upgrades were specifically highlighted in the 2025/2026 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) as a key target for completion before the end of the current municipal financial year in June.
Beyond the traffic offices, the municipality is currently managing several other high-priority projects, including the refurbishment of the reservoir near the 007 shopping complex and the Wedela Waste Water Treatment Works. These efforts are being conducted alongside strategic partnerships, such as the "Re-imagining Merafong" initiative with Harmony Gold, which seeks to leverage mining sector investment for sustainable community development.

The temporary closure of the Carletonville Traffic Department represents a localized step in Merafong City's wider strategy to stabilize and enhance its public facilities. While the diversion to Fochville may pose a short-term inconvenience for some commuters, the municipality maintains that the long-term benefits of a modernized facility will result in a more "community-oriented and safe City." Residents are encouraged to utilize the municipality's fraud and ethics hotlines for any concerns regarding service conduct during this transition period.
