The City of Matlosana is currently navigating a period of intensive administrative activity, balancing the demands of public accountability with the immediate pressures of infrastructure maintenance and urban law enforcement. As the first week of March 2026 unfolds, the municipality has signaled a shift toward stricter compliance and enhanced community engagement to address long-standing challenges in the region.

1. Governance and Public Accountability
The 2024/2025 Annual Report Review
In a major step toward fiscal transparency, the City of Matlosana has issued a formal notice for Public Participation regarding the Annual Report for the 2024/2025 financial year. This process is not merely a formality but a statutory requirement under Section 20 of the Local Government Systems Act (No 32 of 2000) and Chapter 12 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (No 56 of 2003).
Meeting Venue: Auditorium, Klerksdorp Civic Centre
Date & Time: Thursday, 05 March 2026, from 12:00 to 17:00
Objective: To allow the public and council officials to scrutinize the city’s financial health and service delivery performance over the previous fiscal year.
This meeting serves as a critical platform for residents to hold local leadership accountable for budget allocations and project completions.
2. Infrastructure and Essential Services
Water Supply Interruptions in Tigane and Hartbeesfontein
The municipality is currently managing a critical service delivery failure affecting the Tigane and Hartbeesfontein areas. On Tuesday, 3 March 2026, the City confirmed a total water supply interruption caused by dual technical failures:
A mechanical breakdown at the Rietkuil Pump Station.
A significant burst pipeline feeding the Rietkuil Reservoir.
These issues have resulted in zero to low water pressure across the entire affected zone. While the technical teams are on-site, a definitive Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR) has not been provided. To mitigate the humanitarian impact, the municipality has deployed water tankers to provide temporary relief to affected households.
3. Local Economic Development and Urban Renewal
Phase One: Removal of Illegal Outdoor Advertising
The Local Economic Development (LED) Directorate has initiated a crackdown on unauthorized signage within the Klerksdorp area. This enforcement action aims to uphold the Municipal Outdoor Advertising By-law, which seeks to improve urban aesthetics and ensure a fair playing field for businesses that follow legal permit processes.
Recovery Process for Business Owners: Businesses whose signage was removed during Phase One have 60 working days to reclaim their property from the Marketing and Tourism Office at the Stilfontein Civic Center.
To do so, they must:
Pay the prescribed municipal fine.
Complete formal compliance and application forms for future signage.
Note that any signage not claimed within the 60-day window will be permanently disposed of by the municipality.

CBD Special Clean-Up and Compliance Operation
Under the leadership of MMC Wesley Kgang, the city conducted a high-impact "Special Clean-Up" in the Klerksdorp Central Business District (CBD) on Friday, 27 February 2026. The operation targeted:
Licensing: Identifying businesses operating without valid municipal permits.
Hygiene: Enforcing health standards in commercial spaces.
Safety: Issuing notices for non-compliance with national fire safety regulations.
The city has warned that these "blitz" operations will continue indefinitely to ensure the CBD remains a safe and orderly environment for consumers and law-abiding entrepreneurs.
4. Human Settlements and Housing
National Housing Needs Register (NHNR) Outreach
The Directorate for Planning and Human Settlements, led by Cllr Portia Mtshawulana, is actively conducting an outreach program for the National Housing Needs Register (NHNR). This digital database is designed to replace outdated waiting lists and eliminate corruption in the housing allocation sector.

Residents of Matlosana who have not yet been captured on the system are urged to visit the Human Settlements (Housing) Offices between Monday and Friday (08:00 to 15:30).
Requirements: A copy of a valid South African ID.
Goal: To ensure that future housing projects are planned and budgeted for based on accurate, verified data.

5. Upcoming Cultural and Tourism Events
Gastronomy Tourism at Goudkoppie Heritage Hill
Looking ahead, the LED Directorate is set to host a Gastronomy Tourism event on Friday, 20 March 2026. Taking place at the historic Goudkoppie Heritage Hill, the event is part of a broader strategy to position Matlosana as a destination for cultural and culinary excellence, further stimulating the local hospitality economy.

The City of Matlosana continues to urge residents to remain active participants in municipal processes, whether through formal meetings or by ensuring their personal data is updated on the national housing registry. While infrastructure setbacks like the Rietkuil pump failure present immediate challenges, the city's focus on by-law enforcement and financial transparency suggests a long-term commitment to urban revitalization.
