City of Matlosana Engages Communities on Electricity and Housing Challenges

The City of Matlosana has intensified community engagements to address ongoing electricity supply issues and housing concerns within local communities. Led by the municipality’s Electrical Department, the programme is aimed at improving service delivery, enhancing accountability, and strengthening cooperation between officials and residents.

Addressing Electricity Challenges

Recent meetings with residents across the municipality have focused on the installation of new meter boxes, tackling illegal connections, addressing unattended complaints, and reducing safety risks linked to overloading. Power outages, which occur most frequently during the winter months, have been attributed to overloaded transformers. Officials highlighted the importance of completing the electrical project in Extension 24 as a means of preventing further transformer burnouts.

Communities were also encouraged to transition from conventional electricity systems to prepaid meters and to apply for available subsidies to ease the burden of rising electricity costs. In Kanana Hostel, residents specifically requested Eskom’s intervention to assist with energizing meter boxes, a matter that was noted for further action.

Housing and Rental Compliance

Alongside electricity issues, housing concerns were also discussed during the engagements. On 24 August, a joint sectoral meeting was convened with residents of Wards 9 and 11 at the Old Tlokwe Hostel in Jouberton. The discussions focused on non-payment of municipal rentals and electricity charges. Tenants were reminded of the monthly rental requirements, set at R60 for single rooms and R120 for family units, as part of efforts to ensure compliance and sustain housing services.

Strengthening Service Delivery

Through these interventions, the City of Matlosana reaffirmed its commitment to addressing community challenges in both electricity management and housing. The municipality emphasized that consistent engagement with residents, coupled with clear accountability measures, remains central to achieving reliable service delivery and sustainable community development.
