The City of Matlosana recently paused its administrative operations to observe a period of mourning and reflection following the passing of one of its dedicated public servants. Over the weekend of February 21, 2026, the municipality organized a series of formal proceedings to commemorate the life of Councilor Molefi Reginald Sello. These events, characterized by solemnity and civic pride, brought together political leaders, community members, and family to bid a final farewell to a man who dedicated his professional life to the service of Ward 20 and the broader North West province.

Special Council Meeting and Civic Funeral Commences at Civic Center
On Saturday, 21 February 2026, the Klerksdorp Civic Center served as the primary venue for the final rites of the late Cllr Molefi Sello. The day’s proceedings began with a Special Council Meeting held within the Municipal Chamber. This formal gathering allowed the legislative body of the City of Matlosana to pay their final institutional respects.
Following the adjournment of the council session, the focus shifted to the Auditorium Hall for the civic funeral service. The transition from the legislative chamber to the public auditorium symbolized the dual nature of Cllr Sello’s life: a disciplined lawmaker and a man of the people. The municipality officially extended its deepest condolences to the Sello family, acknowledging the significant void left by his passing.

A Comprehensive Tribute to a Life of Service
The civic funeral for Cllr Molefi Reginald Sello was a high-profile event attended by a diverse array of dignitaries and community stakeholders. Born on 3 November 1982 in Gelukspan, Mafikeng, Sello’s journey toward public service began early. After completing his matriculation at R.A. Kobue High School, he pursued higher education at the Vaal Triangle University of Technology.
His political trajectory was marked by a long-standing commitment to the African National Congress (ANC) and its Youth League. Since his election as the Ward 20 Councillor in 2021, he sought to professionalize his role by completing a Municipal Finance Management Programme at NQF Level 6.
During the service, the following key figures offered their tributes:
Speaker of Council, Cllr Stella Mondlane-Ngwenya: Led the initial phase of the funeral program.
ANC Regional Coordinator, Hon. Nathan Oliphant: Offered condolences on behalf of the political organization.
Executive Mayor, Cllr Fikile Mahlophe: Delivered a poignant eulogy highlighting Sello’s dedication to the municipality.
The spiritual component of the day was led by Apostle TD Mofokeng of the Phodiso Worship Center. The late councillor, whose casket was draped in the South African national flag, was later transported to the Old Kanana Cemetery, where he was interred at the Heroes' Acre, a section reserved for those who have made significant contributions to society.

Executive Mayor Performs Formal Flag Presentation
On Sunday, 22 February 2026, the municipality reflected on the final symbolic act of the previous day’s proceedings. Executive Mayor Cllr Fikile Mahlophe performed the official Flag Presentation to the Sello family.
The presentation of the South African National Flag is the highest honor the municipality can bestow during a civic funeral. It serves as a permanent symbol of the state's gratitude for the deceased’s contributions to local government and community development. This gesture concluded the formal mourning period, leaving a legacy for his parents, brother, and children to uphold.
The City of Matlosana continues to provide support to the bereaved family while ensuring that the administrative responsibilities of Ward 20 remain a priority in the wake of this loss.
