Residents have been cautioned about fraudulent individuals posing as municipal workers and attempting to extort money during credit control operations. The warning follows reports of alleged scammers claiming to represent the municipality’s credit control section.

Official Credit Control Measures
Municipal employees are currently carrying out legitimate credit control actions, which include electrical disconnections and reconnections. These services are handled exclusively by municipal staff, with no external service providers appointed for electricity-related functions. The only contractor engaged by the municipality operates specifically on water restrictions.
Public Safety Concerns
The municipality stressed that no unauthorized individual should be allowed onto private property for disconnection or reconnection activities. Community members were further urged not to hand over money to anyone claiming to represent the municipality outside of official channels.
Recognised Payment Channels
All municipal payments must be processed through secure, recognized systems. These include transactions at municipal offices, electronic funds transfers (EFT) into the official municipal bank account, and approved platforms such as Pay@ and EasyPay.
Reporting and Enquiries
Residents seeking clarification or wishing to report suspicious activity can contact the Credit Control Section in the Finance Department at 018 487 8559/8558. Authorities emphasized the importance of vigilance in preventing fraud and protecting consumers from financial exploitation.
