The City of Matlosana once again demonstrated the power of community collaboration and compassion through the 2025 Mayoral Charity Golf Day, held on Friday, 24 October at the scenic Orkney Golf Course. The event, officially opened by Executive Mayor Fikile Mahlophe, brought together business leaders, councillors, and municipal employees for a day that blended competitive sport with a noble cause, raising funds for underprivileged youth seeking access to higher education.

Purpose: Reviving Hope for Students in Need
The annual golf day was more than a networking opportunity; it was a focused effort to revive the Mayor’s Bursary Scheme, a fund that assists deserving students with registration fees and educational expenses. In recent years, the discontinuation of municipal bursary funding left many aspiring students unable to take the first step toward their academic dreams.
Determined to change that, Mayor Mahlophe rallied the business community to stand shoulder to shoulder with the municipality in restoring opportunities for the youth. “We believe in partnering with business to create not only access to education but pathways to employment once students complete their studies,” said Mayor Mahlophe. “Today is about building a future where no young person is denied opportunity because of their financial situation.”
A Day of Competition and Compassion
The event featured spirited competition across various categories, with golfers motivated by both camaraderie and community spirit.
In the Women’s Category, Ms. Mphonyana Mkhondo emerged victorious, displaying skill and poise on the course.
The Men’s Category was won by Mr. Hendrick Mvundlela, whose consistent performance earned him top honors.
Ms. Mpho Mkhondo received the second prize, a one-night stay at Oryx Hotel, while Mr. Matlala claimed the first prize, a two-night stay sponsored by Rio Casino.
Throughout the day, participants played with purpose, knowing that every swing contributed to a greater goal, empowering the next generation of Matlosana’s leaders.

Fundraising Success: Exceeding Expectations
By the end of the event, a total of R430,000 had been raised for the Mayor’s Bursary Fund, surpassing its original target. The overwhelming response from sponsors, donors, and local businesses showcased the region’s unwavering spirit of ubuntu and its dedication to community upliftment.
The funds will directly assist underprivileged students with tertiary education registration fees, providing a stepping stone toward careers that can uplift entire families and communities.
Community Partnerships and Corporate Support
The event underscored the essential role of partnerships between government and business in driving social progress. Corporate contributors such as Rio Casino and Oryx Hotel, both long-standing supporters of Matlosana’s community initiatives, helped ensure the day’s success through their generous sponsorships.
The collaboration also reflected a broader commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) within the region, showing how teamwork between sectors can yield tangible, life-changing results.

A Milestone for Matlosana’s Youth
The 2025 Mayoral Charity Golf Day was a resounding success, not only in its fundraising outcome but in rekindling hope across the district. The R430,000 raised represents far more than financial aid , it symbolizes belief in the potential of young people, unity between sectors, and the strength of shared purpose.

Seeing the City of Matlosana come together for the Mayoral Charity Golf Day and raise R430,000 for youth education genuinely struck me. The energy of participants, from business leaders to municipal staff, showed how much impact a community can have when it rallies around a cause. Supporting underprivileged students through the Mayor’s Bursary Fund not only opens doors to higher education but also builds hope for future careers that can uplift entire families.
