The City of Matlosana Local Municipality has taken a major step toward improving public safety and emergency readiness with the official handover of a new fleet of vehicles to the Department of Fire and Rescue Services under the Directorate of Public Safety. The handover ceremony took place on Friday, 7 November 2025, and was led by Executive Mayor Cllr. Fikile Mahlophe, alongside municipal and departmental leadership.

Event Overview:
The event was attended by MMC for Public Safety Cllr. W. Zitwane, Municipal Manager Ms. Lesego Seametso, Director of Public Safety Mr. Keaobaka Boikanyo, councillors, and municipal officials. The new fleet includes a state-of-the-art fire engine and three Land Cruisers, each purpose-built to enhance operational efficiency and emergency response capabilities across the municipality.
The newly acquired fire engine comes equipped with modern safety and operational features, including a built-in camera system, electronic step ladder, and high-intensity floodlights, which will significantly improve night operations and the municipality’s ability to respond to large structural fires. The Land Cruisers will be deployed to tackle grass and veld fires, ensuring rapid intervention in rural and high-risk areas.
Acknowledgements and Milestones:
During the ceremony, Municipal Manager Ms. Seametso expressed gratitude to all attending officials and fire personnel, commending their commitment, discipline, and service excellence. She also celebrated the reopening of the Stilfontein Fire Station, closed for more than 20 years, as a remarkable achievement and a sign of renewed municipal investment in public safety infrastructure.
Commitment to Firefighter Wellbeing:
Executive Mayor Cllr. Mahlophe emphasised the importance of supporting the mental and emotional health of fire and rescue personnel, noting that regular counselling and debriefing sessions are essential for maintaining resilience in such high-stress professions. He praised the bravery and dedication of the city’s firefighters, acknowledging their vital role in protecting lives, property, and the environment.

Way Forward:
The City of Matlosana reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to strengthening emergency services and enhancing community safety. With the addition of these new vehicles, the municipality is better equipped to respond swiftly to emergencies, minimise fire-related risks, and improve service delivery across the region.
