Recent weeks at PAWS Haven have been marked by a series of urgent operational challenges and significant steps toward facility improvement. As a vital resource for animal welfare in the Potchefstroom area, the organization has had to rely heavily on its community network to navigate infrastructure failures while simultaneously pushing forward with a long-awaited clinical expansion.

Critical Infrastructure and Emergency Support
The stability of the facility was recently put to the test when a severe drainage crisis threatened the safety of the animals. Blocked municipal lines caused water to flood directly into the kennels, creating a hazardous and unsanitary environment, particularly for vulnerable puppies and nursing mothers. After several unsuccessful attempts by the local municipality to resolve the issue, the situation became critical.
The impasse was finally broken through the generous intervention of local community partners. JJW Loodgieters provided the high-pressure equipment necessary to flush the lines and restore proper drainage, while ALS offered essential logistical support. Furthermore, the organization has put out an urgent call for assistance with a TLB or excavator to help with necessary digging on the property, highlighting the ongoing nature of these structural maintenance needs.

Renovations and the Freedom Day Fundraiser
In a major step toward enhancing their medical capabilities, PAWS Haven launched a fundraising drive with a target of R25,000 to upgrade their veterinary facilities. This effort culminated in a successful Freedom Day Fundraiser on April 27th, which featured a variety of community activities, including:
Fundraising Initiatives: The sale of pancakes, cooldrinks, and "skaap broodjies" to support the clinic's expansion.
Adoption Drive: Promoting "freedom" for animals through adoption incentives and lucky draws.
Clinical Improvements: Following the fundraiser, the vet area entered a scheduled renovation phase from April 27th to May 3rd. During this period, Dr. Gerber and the medical team shifted focus to overseeing structural improvements designed to provide a safer, more modern environment for animal treatment.

Community Outreach and Operational Needs
Beyond the physical upgrades, the organization continues to foster its relationship with the local community. The popular visitation program to the Samuel Broadbent care facility remains a highlight, bringing the joy of animal companionship to local elderly residents.
However, maintaining this level of service requires constant support for the human team as well. Recent heavy rains prompted a call for rain suit donations (sizes L and XL) to protect staff who work outdoors in all weather conditions to keep the animals safe and dry. Additionally, the organization has introduced a creative sponsorship model for their veterinary booklets, allowing local businesses to advertise for R500, with proceeds going directly toward the care of the shelter's residents.

A Shared Vision for Animal Care
The recent events at PAWS Haven illustrate a period of both intense challenge and optimistic growth. By addressing immediate emergencies through community partnerships and investing in the future of their veterinary services, the organization is strengthening its ability to serve the animals of Potchefstroom. The successful transition from managing a drainage crisis to completing facility renovations demonstrates the resilience of the team and the enduring support of the local community.
