The Orkney & Klerksdorp Animal Shelter (OAS) is currently at the center of a community-wide effort to manage a Canine Distemper outbreak that has affected both the facility and surrounding residential areas. While the shelter has implemented a temporary lockdown to prioritize animal welfare, the situation has sparked a wave of local activism and support aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.

Direct Support: Raffles and Essential Supplies
The community is currently mobilizing to provide the financial and material resources necessary for the shelter to maintain its rigorous quarantine protocols.
Valentine’s Day Fundraising
A Valentine's Day Raffle has been launched to raise funds for the shelter’s ongoing medical and operational costs.
The Prize: A curated "Self-Care" hamper including a cooler handbag, slippers, a teddy bear, and various wellness items.
How to Participate: Tickets are priced at R10 each.
Entry Process: Payments can be made to the shelter’s ABSA Savings account (Account: 92 5322 4537; Branch: 632005).
Verification: Participants must WhatsApp their proof of payment and name to 082 235 5156.
Deadline: The draw is scheduled for 11 February 2026.

Sanitization and Food Donations
Due to the highly contagious nature of Distemper, the shelter is utilizing large volumes of disinfectants daily.
Disinfectant Drive: Conquest Chemicals in Klerksdorp is supporting the effort by offering a 20% discount on Black Dip and Germicidal disinfectant, and 10% off Hypo (bleach) when purchased for the shelter.
Local Partners: Bark Boutique Pet Salon & Pet Shop recently contributed 170 kg of dog food to ensure nutritional support for the animals during the quarantine.

Education and the "Paw Print" Newsletter
In addition to emergency management, OAS is focusing on long-term education through its digital platforms. The latest edition of the shelter's newsletter provides a comprehensive look at pet care during the summer months and the unique value of mixed-breed animals.
Key features of the current newsletter include:
"Limited Edition Dogs": Insights into the magic of mixed-breed pets.
Summer Safety: Practical advice for keeping animals cool and hydrated in the heat.
Registration: Residents can sign up for the newsletter via the official website at orkneykldanimalshelter.co.za.

A Regional Health Overview
While the shelter is currently under strict quarantine, officials emphasize that Canine Distemper is a broader regional concern. Confirmed cases have been identified in Jouberton, Kanana, and Orkney that are entirely unrelated to the shelter's population.
Understanding the Disease
Distemper is a viral disease that spreads through the air and contaminated surfaces. It is particularly prevalent in areas with low vaccination rates. Because the virus has an incubation period of 3 to 14 days, dogs can appear healthy while they are already contagious.
The Role of Vaccination
Veterinary guidance highlights vaccination as the most effective tool for community-wide protection.
Effectiveness: A full series of three vaccines provides over 95% protection.
Local Resources: Facilities such as Rainbow Vet, Buffeldoorn Dierekliniek, Flamwood Veterinarian, and Klerksdorp Dierehospitaal are available for those needing to update their pets' vaccinations.
The shelter remains closed to the public and adoptions are suspended while deep-cleaning and isolation protocols continue. Management has expressed gratitude for the community's continued adherence to these temporary measures.
