In celebration of the Democratic Alliance’s 25th anniversary, members of the JB Marks Constituency conducted a winter outreach on Friday, 27 June 2025, at the Safe Havens Elderly Home in Promosa, ward 13. The visit was marked by heartfelt interactions, warm soup, and the donation of essential items to residents facing the winter chill.

Winter Relief for Residents
The constituency donated 12 blankets and 55 books to elderly residents as part of a broader community initiative. The donation, aimed at providing comfort during the cold season, was further enriched by the contribution of books from a local Christian society, facilitated by the NG Church in Potchefstroom. These thoughtful gifts brought both physical warmth and emotional upliftment to the elderly community.

Leadership and Community Spirit
Councillors Nchoela and Glenville Boeda Fransman led the visit and spent time engaging with residents and staff. The councillors, along with guests, shared a simple but meaningful meal of soup and rolls with the elderly, a gesture that echoed the Democratic Alliance’s commitment to compassion, dignity, and community upliftment. Cllr Fransman expressed gratitude to DA leader John Steenhuisen and the executive for enabling such impactful grassroots actions.

Continuing the Initiative
According to the local DA branch, the remaining blankets from the drive will be distributed in other parts of JB Marks in the coming days, continuing the celebration of the party’s 25th anniversary through service. This initiative forms part of a broader birthday campaign aimed at directly benefiting vulnerable communities.

Why Supporting the Elderly Matters
Supporting the elderly, especially in care homes, is vital for upholding community values and social responsibility. Many older citizens face physical, emotional, and economic challenges that are often intensified in winter. Acts of kindness, like providing blankets, books, or meals, not only address immediate needs but also foster a sense of inclusion and respect for the contributions of senior generations.

A Gesture That Warms More Than Just Bodies
The visit to Safe Havens Elderly Home exemplified how simple acts, rooted in community spirit and leadership, can make a lasting impact. As winter continues across Potchefstroom, the DA’s outreach efforts bring timely relief and meaningful connection to those who need it most.
