The Democratic Alliance (DA) has finalized its 2026 Federal Congress at the Gallagher Convention Centre, marking the formal conclusion of its internal leadership elections. The event, which hosted over 2,000 delegates, served as the platform for the party to transition its executive structure following the resignation of John Steenhuisen.
The congress proceeded according to the party’s internal democratic systems, focusing on constitutional amendments, policy resolutions, and the verification of new leadership. Presiding officers oversaw the voting process to ensure compliance with the party’s governing documents and to maintain organizational transparency.
Election Outcomes and Executive Appointments
The delegates elected a new slate of officials to lead the party through the upcoming 2026 legislative cycle. The executive results are as follows:
Federal Leader: Geordin Hill-Lewis
Federal Chairperson: Solly Msimanga
Deputy Federal Chairpersons: Siviwe Gwarube (1st), Cilliers Brink (2nd), and Solly Malatsi (3rd).
Chairperson of the Federal Council: Ashor Sarupen
Deputy Chairpersons of the Federal Council: JP Smith (1st), Thomas Walters (2nd), and Carl Pophaim (3rd).
Chairperson of Federal Finance: Dr. Mark Burke
A New Vision Under Geordin Hill-Lewis
At 39 years old, Geordin Hill-Lewis becomes one of the youngest leaders to helm the party. Born on December 31, 1986, Hill-Lewis has been a career politician within the DA, joining during his matric year and later founding the Democratic Alliance Students’ Organisation (DASO) at the University of Cape Town. His rise has been steady, having served as Chief of Staff to both Helen Zille and Mmusi Maimane, and becoming the youngest Member of Parliament in 2011 at the age of 24.
In his acceptance speech, Hill-Lewis emphasized a four-point plan focused on connecting with a broader voter base and maintaining the party's influence within the national coalition. Despite his new federal responsibilities, Hill-Lewis has confirmed he intends to remain the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, planning to appoint a proxy to manage daily party interactions within the Cabinet.
Administrative and Policy Context
The 2026 Congress was noted as the largest in the organization's history, reflecting changes in delegate representation across all nine provinces. Beyond the election of individuals, the assembly focused on logistical coordination and the ratification of leadership reports intended to guide the party's governance strategy for the next term.
With the conclusion of this congress, the newly elected officials are tasked with managing the party's internal operations and its public policy positions. The transition occurs as the party prepares for the next phase of its participation in South Africa’s multi-party political environment.

The DA administration has acknowledged the participation of all delegates and confirmed that the handover of responsibilities to the newly elected candidates will commence immediately. The party maintains that the systems utilized during this congress support its continued institutional stability.
