As South Africa marks the close of Tourism and Heritage Month, the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality and JB Marks Local Municipality’s Local Economic and Rural Development (LERD) Department, in partnership with the Department of Education and the Potchefstroom Tourism Association, proudly hosted the Dr. KK Tourism Schools Competition Storytelling event at the Govan Mbeki Hall.

Celebrating Heritage Through Storytelling
The event highlighted the crucial role of storytelling in tourism, showcasing how narratives can preserve cultural identity while promoting responsible travel. Storytelling brings heritage to life by connecting people with the landscapes, traditions, and communities that define the North West region.
By sharing these stories, young learners and future leaders were encouraged to embrace their cultural roots while positioning themselves as ambassadors for local tourism.

Nurturing Future Tourism Ambassadors
The competition provided a platform for learners to demonstrate their creativity, knowledge, and passion for local heritage. Their stories captured the richness of community life and the uniqueness of the region’s culture, leaving both visitors and residents with a deeper appreciation of Potchefstroom and the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District as a whole.
Through this initiative, the municipalities and partners aim to inspire the next generation of storytellers, ensuring that the district’s heritage continues to be celebrated and preserved for years to come.

A Shared Vision for the Future
Tourism storytelling not only strengthens community pride but also attracts travelers by offering authentic and meaningful experiences. As the event concluded, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting educational initiatives that link tourism with heritage preservation.

The Dr. KK Tourism Schools Competition Storytelling event stands as a reminder that the voices of young people are central to the sustainable growth of the tourism sector in the district.
