The Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, in partnership with JB Marks Local Municipality’s Sport, Arts and Culture division, successfully hosted the Dr KK District Gospel Clap & Tap Competition on 27 September 2025 at the Govan Mbeki Community Hall in Potchefstroom.
The event brought together top choirs from across the Dr KK District, showcasing the vibrant and soulful Clap & Tap gospel genre.

From Service Point to District Stage
The competition began at Service Point Level across the district, where choirs vied for the top three positions. Now, those winners, first, second, and third place from each Service Point, have advanced to the District Level, where they are competing for the chance to represent Dr KK at the upcoming Provincial Level contest.

Promoting and Growing the Genre
According to organizers, the initiative is more than just a competition; it is about promoting and showcasing the Clap & Tap gospel genre, while creating a platform for choirs to develop and thrive.
“We have realized that in the past, these choirs have not received the support they deserve. This initiative is meant to change that, by nurturing their talent and giving them opportunities to grow,” said representatives from the Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation.

A Celebration of Faith and Community
The atmosphere at Govan Mbeki Community Hall was filled with harmony, rhythm, and spiritual upliftment as choirs performed with passion, leaving the audience inspired. Beyond competition, the event reinforced the role of gospel music in uniting communities and celebrating local talent.
The winning choirs from the District Level will move forward to compete at the Provincial Level, where they will represent the Dr KK District and showcase their voices on an even bigger stage.
