Fans Decide: FNB Player of the Tournament Voting Heats Up

The 2025 Varsity Football season has delivered late drama, big upsets, and unforgettable goals. Now, as UFS and TUT prepare to contest the grand final at Shimla Park in Bloemfontein on Thursday, 2 October, attention also turns to the FNB Player of the Tournament award.
This prestigious prize not only recognises the standout performer of the season but also rewards the winner with a big cash prize from FNB and the keys to a Hertz-sponsored car for a year. After weeks of competitive action, the coaches have spoken, and the final decision now lies in the hands of the fans.
How the Nominees Were Chosen
Each of the eight head coaches nominated three players who impressed them most throughout the season, though they could not select players from their own squads.
Nominations were weighted:
1st = 3 points
2nd = 2 points
3rd = 1 point
After tallying the scores, three players emerged as the top candidates for 2025:
🏆 The Final Shortlist
Omphemetse Athibeng (UFS) A creative spark for the Kovsies, Athibeng combines speed, skill, and power. Known for his composure under pressure, his standout strike against DUT earned him a deserved FNB Player of the Match award.
Aphelele Sibisi (NWU) The Eagles captain was a rock at the back and an inspirational leader. Sibisi’s commanding presence lifted NWU throughout the season, earning him multiple FNB Player of the Match accolades. “I have a personal need to show how far I can go, and that starts with giving everything for this team,” he reflected.
Jarome Jansen (UFS) Instrumental in leading UFS to their first-ever Varsity Football final, Jansen’s attacking brilliance and creativity have been vital. A Bachelor of Administration student, he cites Themba Zwane as his role model and dreams of turning professional.

With voting underway, it’s a close race between two giants of Varsity Football:
44% – Aphelele Sibisi (NWU)
44% – Jarome Jansen (UFS)
12% – Omphemetse Athibeng (UFS)
The voting window remains open until Wednesday, 1 October at 09:00. The winner will be revealed after the final on Thursday, 2 October.
