Five-Star Springboks Silence Nairobi to Retain African Crown

The Springbok Women cemented their status as the undisputed queens of continental rugby, securing their fifth consecutive Rugby Africa Women’s Cup title with a gritty 35-20 victory over the Kenya Lionesses in Nairobi. Facing a hostile home crowd and a fiercely determined opponent, the South Africans overcame a halftime deficit by executing a clinical second-half tactical blueprint. The hard-fought win not only preserves their regional dominance but also rounds off a highly successful developmental campaign on a perfect note.

Lionesses Roar Early in Tactical Chess Match

The first half unfolded as a high-stakes tactical battle, with South Africa deliberately employing a deep kicking game to pin Kenya back and avoid playing rugby in their own territory. While the "Bok Women" dominated territory, their execution was heavily disrupted by Kenya's ferocious work at the breakdown, where the hosts forced crucial turnovers.

The scoring opened with a display of pure determination from South African right wing Alichia Arries, who powered through a cluster of defenders to score in the corner, allowing Jakkie Cilliers to slot a magnificent touchline conversion. However, Kenya hit back via centre Faith Livoi, who capitalized on a fortunate bounce from a kick ahead. A subsequent penalty from flyhalf Sinaida Mokaya saw the Lionesses edge ahead 8-7 at the interval, leaving the tournament decider resting on a knife-edge.

Bomb Squad and Clinical Burst Decides the Crown

Assistant coach Franzel September’s pre-match strategy to split the bench with six forwards and two backs proved to be the masterstroke. As the Kenyan defensive line began to tire under the relentless pressure of the South African pick-and-drive, the Springbok Women unleashed a devastating 17-minute blitz in the third quarter.

Quick ball recycling and superior numbers out wide resulted in three unanswered tries:

  • Naima Hlatshwayo pierced the midfield to restore the lead.

  • Logan Welman continued her stellar tournament form by crashing over from the base.

  • Jakkie Cilliers finished sharply on the left wing to stretch the advantage.

The resilient Kenyans launched a late counter-attack, capitalizing on an errant South African kick to close the deficit to just two points with five minutes remaining. Showing immense composure under pressure, Cilliers calmed South African nerves with two clutch penalty goals, before replacement Ntsako Mbombi sealed the championship after the siren with her maiden Test try from a powerful lineout drive.

Final Whistle

This championship victory will taste particularly sweet for the Springbok Women due to the sheer adversity they had to conquer on the road. By rectifying the errors of their previous outing against Uganda and demonstrating elite game management in front of a raucous Kenyan crowd, this relatively young squad proved they possess the mental fortitude required for the international stage.

With a short break on the horizon, the team returns to South Africa with three wins from three matches before pivoting toward their next major challenge: a highly anticipated two-Test home series against the USA.
