The first major leg of the "Beitbrug to Blouberg" 2,600km cycle tour has concluded with a triumphant arrival in Potchefstroom. Since rolling out from the Zimbabwean border at 5:00 AM on March 21, lead cyclist Shaun has battled extreme South African elements to complete the trek’s opening chapter, successfully navigating the transition from the Limpopo bushveld into the heart of the North West province.

The journey began with a high-intensity departure from Musina, but the true test of endurance arrived on Day 2. Facing a gauntlet of sweltering heat, thick sand, and water-logged paths that forced multiple reroutes, Shaun and his support partner, Nico, pushed through a grueling 241km stint to reach Mookgophong. This early display of resilience set the tone for a mission defined by physical sacrifice for a greater cause.

Community Spirit Fuels the Pedals
The arrival in Potchefstroom on March 24 served as a high point for the expedition’s morale. The local community turned out in force, lining the roads with cheers and escorted Shaun into town. This "home-ground" reception resulted in a massive influx of physical donations, including bags of pet food and financial contributions specifically designated for the animals at Paws Haven.
To combat the physical toll of the first several hundred kilometers, local supporters like Body Fuel stepped in to provide specialized electrolytes. Organizers noted that while the road is beginning to "leave its mark" on Shaun’s physical condition, the overwhelming community support acts as a vital battery recharge for the team.

A Face for the Cause: Sussie’s Search for a Home
Amidst the logistics of the ride, the mission remains centered on individual lives. One such life is Sussie, a soft-hearted dog at Paws Haven who recently faced the heartbreak of a potential adoption falling through.
Sussie is currently back at the shelter, searching for an "everlasting home" where she can thrive. While Shaun rides for her, organizers remind the public that Sussie is just one of many animals, including dozens of puppies and adult dogs, currently awaiting a second chance at the NPC. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of why Shaun continues to push through the fatigue.

The Road South: Bothaville and Beyond
As of March 25, the expedition has officially moved back onto the road, heading toward Bothaville. The team has strategically built an extra day into the itinerary to account for mounting physical fatigue and to ensure the safety of the riders as they move into the Free State.

The Mission: Paws Haven NPC
The "Beitbrug to Blouberg" tour is a dedicated fundraising drive for Paws Haven Potchefstroom. Supporters can contribute by sponsoring a day of the trip or donating directly to Nedbank account 132 156 5046 (Reference: B2B). Every "can of food" or "bag of pellets" brought to the tour stops makes a direct impact on the lives of rescued animals.

A Long Road Ahead
As the wheels turn toward the Free State and eventually the Western Cape, the "Beitbrug to Blouberg" initiative serves as a powerful testament to the impact of community-driven charity. While the physical challenge for Shaun is immense, the focus remains steadfastly on the animals awaiting their forever homes at Paws Haven.
With hundreds of kilometers still to cover before the April 1st finish line at Blouberg, the team invites every South African to become a part of this journey, whether through a small donation, a bag of food, or a simple wave from the roadside, to ensure no animal is left behind.
