Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and femicide remain some of the most devastating social challenges facing South Africa. With rising cases affecting women, children, and vulnerable groups in communities across the nation, public awareness and collective prevention efforts have become more urgent than ever. In response to this ongoing crisis, a GBV & Femicide Public Awareness Programme will be held on 2 December 2025, at 10:00, at Promosa Hall.
This gathering aims to empower the community with knowledge, resources, and a united voice against the violence that continues to haunt homes, schools, workplaces, and public spaces.

A Call for Unity Against GBVF
The programme’s theme, boldly reflected in the poster’s message, “STOP GBVF” , highlights the need for society to stand together. Survivors of abuse often remain silent due to fear, stigma, or lack of support. This event seeks to break that silence by:
✔ Educating the public
Attendees will learn about the forms of gender-based violence, early warning signs, available support structures, and legal processes that protect victims.
✔ Strengthening community involvement
Community members, leaders, and families are encouraged to participate actively in prevention efforts and to support those affected.
✔ Promoting prevention and reporting
Empowerment begins with awareness. By understanding the cycles of abuse and their impact, communities can better prevent violence and report cases promptly.
Symbolism in the Campaign Poster
The campaign poster features the faces of several individuals with their eyes covered by the words “STOP GBVF” in bold purple text, a powerful symbol indicating that GBV affects people across age, gender, and background. The use of purple, internationally associated with anti-violence campaigns, reinforces unity, justice, and remembrance of victims.
The imagery reflects the emotional weight of the crisis and highlights how violence silences and harms victims across society. It also emphasizes the collective responsibility to see, hear, and act.
Government and Local Support
The programme is supported by the Department of Arts, Culture, Sports & Recreation; JB Marks Local Municipality; the North West Provincial Government; and other national initiatives aligned with the National Development Plan (NDP). Their involvement demonstrates a growing commitment to protecting citizens and promoting safer communities.
Why This Event Matters
GBV is not only a criminal issue, it is a social, economic, and psychological burden that destroys families and futures. Awareness events like this help:
Break misconceptions about abuse
Encourage community vigilance
Provide victims with essential resources
Foster partnerships between government, NGOs, and citizens
Every conversation held, every story shared, and every resource distributed moves the country one step closer to a safer future.
