The Leopards’ Carling Currie Cup First Division campaign got off to an agonizing but action-packed start on Saturday, June 13, 2026. Despite a valiant, high-scoring effort at Olen Park, the Leopard's suffered a narrow 44-38 defeat at the hands of a ruthless Dotsure SWD Eagles side.
The match was a classic tale of two halves, heavily influenced by discipline. The Leopards roared out of the starting blocks in front of their home crowd, showcasing brilliant attacking flair. Shaun-Christian Baxter crossed the whitewash early on, while Siniothando Tshontsyi proved to be a handful for the Eagles' defense, bagging a clinical first-half brace. Flyhalf Jandre Burger pulled the strings masterfully, slotting conversions and crossing for a try of his own. Even with a yellow card handed to Adri Kermis, the Leopards showed immense grit to carry a 26-24 lead into the halftime break.

However, the momentum shifted decisively early in the second half. Leopards centre Brandon Keevy was shown a costly red card, reducing the home side to 14 men for the remainder of the encounter.
The SWD Eagles capitalized on their numerical advantage immediately. The visitors ran in a flurry of second-half tries via Niel Beukes, Ulrich Wahl, Sean Roulston, and Rosco Syster to complement their first-half scores from Sisipho Nofuya, Masande Mtshali, Janus Venter, and Ulrich Stander.
Refusing to back down, the 14-man Leopards fought gallantly in the closing stages. Impact player Naiden Jaarts scored two late tries to secure two crucial bonus points for the hosts (one for scoring four or more tries and one for losing by seven points or fewer). Ultimately, the bounce of the rugby ball did not favor the Green and Red army, as the Eagles held on for a brave 44-38 bonus-point victory away from home.

Round 1: Across the Ground Results
While the drama unfolded in Potchefstroom, the rest of the First Division kicked off with high-scoring spectacles across the country:
Border Bulldogs 19–52 Griffons: The defending champions, the Griffons, kicked off their title defense in style at Police Park in East London. Exploiting a first-half disciplinary meltdown from Border that saw them reduced to 13 men at one point, the Welkom-based side dominated completely, securing an emphatic bonus-point away win.
Valke 49–28 Eastern Province: Last year's runners-up, the Valke, laid down a serious marker at Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park. A rapid four-try blitz in the first half set up a commanding lead, allowing the East Randers to cruise to a comfortable bonus-point victory despite a spirited second-half fightback from EP.

The Leopards will put this opening-day heartbreak behind them quickly as they regroup for Round 2. They face a massive challenge away from home against the defending champion Griffons at the Down Touch Investments Stadium in Welkom on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
