Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has selected a heavily experienced, star-studded starting line-up to face England in the inaugural Nations Championship at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday, 4 July. Looking to make an emphatic start to the new competition, the South African brains trust has reverted to a tried-and-tested spine, naming a matchday 23 that boasts a combined total of 1,099 Test caps.

The blockbuster clash marks England's first visit to the iconic Johannesburg venue since 2018, a historic fixture that served as loose forward Siya Kolisi’s first Test as national captain. On Saturday, Kolisi will run out to lead the world champions for the 72nd time in his illustrious career.

Strategic Continuity Anchors Starting Lineup

The starting fifteen features immense tactical stability, boasting 935 caps across the board (567 among the forwards and 368 in the backline). Reigned World Rugby Men’s Player of the Year Malcolm Marx anchors the front row at hooker, packing down between powerful loosehead Ox Nche and the versatile Thomas du Toit.

The tight five is reinforced by the presence of lock Eben Etzebeth, who is set to extend his record as the most-capped Springbok in history with his 142nd appearance. He partners Vodacom Bulls lock Ruan Nortje in the engine room, while the familiar, abrasive loose trio of Kolisi, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Jasper Wiese completes the forward pack.

In the backline, the halfback pairing of Grant Williams and Manie Libbok receives the nod to dictate play. They are flanked by the trusted, hard-running midfield pairing of Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel. Striking an imposing balance of aerial security and lethal counter-attacking pace, Kurt-Lee Arendse occupies the left wing, rounding out a world-class back three alongside Cheslin Kolbe and Damian Willemse.

The fixture carries immense personal significance for the outside backs, as dynamic utility back Damian Willemse and lethal finisher Cheslin Kolbe are both scheduled to earn their milestone 50th Test caps. Coincidentally, both players made their international debuts back in 2018 and have since established themselves as pillars of South Africa's back-to-back World Cup triumphs.

Tactical 5-2 Split and Squad Adjustments

Erasmus has opted for a traditional five-three split on the replacements bench, balancing developmental depth with high-impact utility cover. Rising front-row prospects Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Gerhard Steenekamp, and Zach Porthen provide the backup front-row resources. They are joined by the abrasive Marco van Staden and highly rated loose forward Cameron Hanekom, who returns to the matchday setup for the first time since November 2024.

The backline cover is loaded with versatile options. Veteran scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, who is just five points shy of registering 100 career points for South Africa, is joined by powerhouse center Andre Esterhuizen and the agile Canan Moodie.

The selection process was altered by a few medical enforced changes. Lock options Franco Mostert (niggle) and Lood de Jager (illness) were ruled out of contention for the tournament opener, while promising utility forward Riley Norton was released from camp following an injury. Conversely, the squad receives a boost on Monday with the return of young wing Ethan Hooker, who has successfully rehabilitated a shoulder injury that kept him sidelined since April.

High-Stakes Double-Header at Ellis Park

Historically, Johannesburg has been a fortress for South Africa against English touring sides. The Springboks have emerged victorious in three of their four previous encounters against England at Ellis Park, with their solitary defeat at the venue dating back to 1972. The match also represents the first meeting between the cross-hemisphere rivals since South Africa's hard-fought 29-20 victory during the 2024 end-of-year tour.

The Test match completes an elite double-header of international rugby in Johannesburg. Ahead of the men's kick-off at 17h40, the Springbok Women will take the field at 13h30 to host the United States national team in a historic first-ever clash between the two sides on South African soil.
