In a landmark moment for Merafong City Local Municipality, electricity has been officially switched on for the first time in Khutsong South Extensions 5, marking the beginning of a new chapter for residents in the area.

A Milestone for Service Delivery
The historic switch-on was led by Executive Mayor Cllr. Nozilo Best, joined by the MMC for Electricity, Water & Gas, Cllr. Luvo Mgani, Ward Councillor Cllr. Ernest Tibane, Municipal Manager Mr. Mabuza, and Executive Director for Energy Mr. Gubevu. Together, they presided over the activation of electricity in the newly built section of the city, a development welcomed with great enthusiasm by the local community.
The municipality described the occasion as a breakthrough that will significantly improve quality of life, enable economic opportunities, and contribute to safer, better-connected neighbourhoods.
Safety Precautions for Residents
Because this is a first-time electricity supply, officials urged households to practice caution. Residents were advised to keep heavy appliances such as stoves, geysers, and heaters switched off during the initial power-on process. The guidance emphasized switching on appliances gradually, one at a time, to allow the system to stabilise.
The municipality also reminded residents to stay clear of electrical infrastructure for their own safety and to promptly report any faults to the official municipal emergency lines.

Partnership and Progress
Municipal leaders attributed the milestone to collective efforts between government, technical teams, and community stakeholders. They thanked the people of Khutsong for their patience and cooperation throughout the development phase.
Looking Ahead
The first switch-on at Khutsong South Extensions 5 represents more than just lights turning on, it is a signal of progress, resilience, and hope. For residents, it brings the promise of improved living conditions and new possibilities for economic participation. For the municipality, it underscores a commitment to infrastructure expansion and community development.
