The road to the 2026 Local Government Elections officially intensified on the weekend of 20–21 June, as hundreds of thousands of citizens across South Africa showed up at nearly 24,000 voting stations nationwide. In its ongoing drive to ensure every voice is heard, the Electoral Commission (IEC) declared the first nationwide Voter Registration Weekend a massive success. From first-time youth voters stepping up for their future to community members verifying their residential details, the momentum is building ahead of the municipal elections later this year.

The latest data released by the IEC shows a steady and promising climb in voter roll numbers. Take a look at how each province performed over the intense two-day registration drive:
📊 Total Voter Registrations by Province

South African youth is leading the charge on the voter roll!
What’s truly exciting about the first Registration Weekend on 20–21 June 2026 is that young people are absolutely dominating new registration transactions. Out of 477,174 first-time registrants across the country, a massive 379,767 (80%) came from young people aged 16–29, proving that the next generation is ready to stand up, show up, and shape the future of their municipalities.
