JB Marks Announces Temporary Closure of Potch Library and Art Gallery for Essential Maintenance

The JB Marks Local Municipality has officially announced the temporary closure of two of its prominent civic and cultural facilities, the Potchefstroom Main Library and the adjacent Museum Art Gallery. The closure, scheduled to begin on Monday, 20 July 2026, is required to undertake comprehensive maintenance work aimed at restoring the interior environment of both venues to acceptable safety standards.

Addressing Occupational Health and Safety Concerns

The primary driver behind the temporary shutdown is the deteriorated condition of the carpets within the facilities. Over an extended period, ongoing roof leaks at the Potchefstroom Main Library have severely impacted the carpeting, leading to dampness and degradation.

To prevent these conditions from escalating into a more severe Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) hazard for municipal employees and visiting members of the public, the municipality has commissioned professional carpet cleaning services. This proactive measure is designed to thoroughly sanitize the affected areas and ensure a hygienic environment for all occupants.

Scope of the Maintenance Operations

Due to the intensive nature of the restoration, the appointed contractor will utilize specialized chemical cleaning agents and heavy-duty extraction equipment. Consequently, the facilities must remain completely vacant during the process.

  • Closure Period: Monday, 20 July 2026, to Friday, 24 July 2026.

  • Restricted Access: No staff members, researchers, or members of the general public will be permitted inside the buildings during these five working days.

  • Safety Protocol: The restriction is necessary to allow the chemical treatments to set and dry completely, preventing exposure to potentially harmful fumes or damp conditions.

Note: The municipality has emphasized that normal operations and public access will officially resume on Saturday, 25 July 2026, once the facilities are formally declared safe and dry.

The JB Marks Local Municipality has expressed its sincere apologies to the community, students, and regular visitors for any inconvenience caused by this temporary disruption. By prioritizing these essential maintenance works, the local authority aims to safeguard public health while preserving the longevity of these vital community assets.
