The JB Marks Local Municipality’s Department of Transversal Services will be commemorating Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July 2025, starting from 09:00, with a series of impactful community service activities. Under the guiding quote "It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity," the municipality aims to honor Nelson Mandela’s legacy through service and care.

Focus Areas for the 2025 Mandela Day
The celebration will encompass several targeted community projects designed to uplift and support vulnerable groups within the municipality. These initiatives are structured around three core areas:
1. Renovations and Support Services
The municipality will spearhead renovations at the Tlokwe Crisis Centre, a short-term shelter for Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) survivors, and the Thuthuzela Care Centre, focusing on refurbishing the children’s corner to provide a safer and more comforting environment for young victims.
2. Community Awareness and Childline Updates
Efforts will also be directed toward updating childline boards throughout the municipality. These updates will appear on both national and regional roads, displaying new service numbers for children’s GBVF and therapy services to ensure greater accessibility and awareness.
3. Mandela Day Program at Tshwaraganang Disability Centre
A robust program will unfold at the Tshwaraganang Disability Centre with the following activities:
Cleaning and maintenance of the center
Grass cutting and general landscaping
Establishment of a food garden
Donations from the Office of the Premier and the Road Accident Fund
Repairs to lighting and water pumps
Electrical installations and upgrades
Paving of the center’s entrance
Engagement with the Potch Champions for games and sports with indigenous themes
Aerobics sessions for all attendees
Repairs to the Kumbi and Minibus used by the center
Distribution of food parcels to those in need
Leadership and Coordination
The event will be led by Cllr. Thandiwe Mtayi, MMC for Transversal Services. For more details or to get involved, residents are encouraged to contact Ms. Regomoditswe Sebogodi at 079 167 7300.
Commitment to Mandela's Legacy
This celebration is part of the JB Marks Municipality’s broader commitment to social development and inclusive governance. By focusing on direct action in areas such as shelter renovation, community support, and disability care, the municipality continues to embody the spirit of Nelson Mandela’s call for active citizenship.
