In a vibrant two-day event, the JB Marks Local Municipality’s Tourism Unit, in partnership with the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation, and Tourism (DEDECT), brought together local tourism stakeholders, conservationists, and adventure enthusiasts at the Vredefort Dome. The initiative celebrated the harmony between tourism and environmental preservation, demonstrating how eco-adventures can drive both economic growth and sustainability.

Exploring the Wonders of the Vredefort Dome
The event unfolded amid the breathtaking geological landscape of the Vredefort Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest meteorite impact structures on Earth. Participants immersed themselves in discussions and outdoor sessions focused on the balance between recreation and conservation, highlighting the importance of protecting natural heritage while encouraging responsible exploration.
Building Knowledge Through Conservation Awareness
Building on the success of the Reptile Awareness Talk hosted by African Indigenous Reptiles, attendees deepened their understanding of biodiversity and the ecological significance of indigenous species. This educational component reinforced the idea that sustainable tourism begins with environmental respect and informed stewardship of natural ecosystems.
Adventure Meets Environmental Responsibility
Following the awareness sessions, participants ventured into the outdoors with Real Adventures, experiencing the excitement of eco-friendly tourism through guided activities. From hiking trails to adventure courses, the experience emphasised that responsible tourism can be both thrilling and educational. The activities showcased how adventure tourism can coexist with conservation, driving both local engagement and environmental mindfulness.

Empowering a Greener Future for JB Marks
The collaboration between JB Marks Municipality, DEDECT, and local eco-tourism partners underscored a shared commitment to positioning the region as a premier sustainable tourism destination. Through education, adventure, and conservation, the initiative is fostering a culture of environmental guardianship, empowering the community to protect the natural assets that define its identity.
The success of this event highlights a growing movement: sustainability is not just a goal, but a journey shared by all who call JB Marks home.
