Issued regarding the incident at Chubby Chick’s head office in Potchefstroom on Monday, 10 November
The 73‑year‑old suspect who shot Mr. Johnathan Fourie and Mr. Deon Fourie at our head office on Monday, 10 November is not a former employee and has no connection to Chubby Chick.
According to preliminary information, a meeting took place between Directors Mr. Johnathan Fourie and Mr. Deon Fourie and another individual, possibly regarding a property transaction. The statement further clarifies that the shooting occurred after the meeting had concluded, not during it.

After the meeting, the individual left the building and returned approximately 30 minutes later. At that time, Mr. Deon Fourie was still in the boardroom when the suspect entered and shot him multiple times. Mr. Fourie called for help; Mr. Johnathan Fourie immediately responded and confronted the suspect in the boardroom, where he was also shot multiple times.
Security personnel intervened, during which additional shots were fired. The suspect was wounded and transported to a local hospital, where he is under strict police guard. Tragically, Mr. Johnathan Fourie was declared deceased at the scene. Mr. Deon Fourie was airlifted to a hospital in Gauteng, underwent surgery, and remains in the Intensive Care Unit in a critical but stable condition.
Chubby Chick wishes to make it clear that this incident was not racially motivated. The suspect has no formal association with Chubby Chick, he is not an employee, former employee, or contractor. We condemn and reject any rumours or speculation suggesting otherwise.
Our business continuity plan was activated immediately. Chubby Chick continues operating while prioritising the well‑being of our people. Comprehensive counselling and trauma support have been made available to all employees and their families. These sessions are ongoing, and further support will be provided as needed.

A Message to Potchefstroom
This is a heartbreaking moment for Potchefstroom. Our town will take time to heal from this tragedy. For decades, the Fourie family and Chubby Chick have been a cornerstone of the town’s history and its people. We stand with every employee, supplier, customer, and neighbour who feels this loss. We are grateful for the compassion shown by the community and emergency services, and we ask for continued respect, unity, and patience as the authorities complete their work and as our community grieves and recovers.
Most of all, our sincerest condolences to the families impacted by this incident, our heartfelt prayers are with you during this time.
