September is recognized as Basic Education and Literacy Month, a time to reflect on the transformative power of learning and to take action in strengthening access to education. In Klerksdorp, the Rotaract Club of Klerksdorp has stepped forward with an initiative that is both simple and impactful: collecting old books, stationery, and learning materials to be donated to schools in need.

The Need for Literacy Support
South Africa continues to face a literacy crisis. Research shows that:
81% of Grade 4 learners struggle to read with comprehension.
43% of homes with children have no books at all.
Only 8% of schools have usable libraries.
Children who are read to daily can gain 1.4 million words before they even start school.
These numbers paint a sobering picture. For many children, the lack of books is not just an inconvenience, it is a barrier to opportunity. Improving literacy is not simply about learning to read; it is about nurturing confidence, imagination, and a lifelong love of learning.

Be Part of the Solution
Rotaract Klerksdorp is inviting the community to support local learners through three key actions:
Donate Educational SuppliesDrop off old books, stationery, or learning materials at Ronmar’s office in Flamwood. At the end of September, Rotaract will deliver the collected items to local schools.📍 Address: 73 Platan Ave, Flamwood, Klerksdorp, 2572
Mentor a LearnerOffer your time to help a young student with reading or homework. Even a small commitment can make a big difference in building literacy skills and academic confidence.
Start a “Read Together” CircleGather family, friends, or neighbors once a week to read with children. Shared stories foster stronger literacy, deeper imagination, and stronger bonds within the community.

A Call to Action
This September, every donation and every moment spent mentoring can help shape the future of a child. Books that once gathered dust on shelves can find new life in eager hands. Stationery and learning materials that seem small to some can unlock big opportunities for others.
By joining hands with Rotaract Klerksdorp, the community has the chance to inspire a new generation of confident readers and lifelong learners. Together, we can bring hope, curiosity, and possibility to local schools, one book at a time.
