Klerksdorp Library Services is inviting residents to take part in a 4km Walk Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), an awareness initiative aimed at uniting the community in the fight against violence, particularly toward women and girls. The walk forms part of broader national activism efforts and aligns with the international 16 Days of Activism campaign.

Purpose of the Walk
The walk is organised as part of the City of Matlosana Library Services’ commitment to social awareness and community outreach. While GBV remains a critical challenge affecting individuals, families, and communities across South Africa, the theme highlights a rapidly growing concern: digital violence, including online harassment, cyberstalking, image-based abuse, and digital intimidation.
By hosting this walk, the Library Services aim to:
Raise awareness about GBV in all its forms
Encourage community solidarity
Promote safe online spaces, especially for women and girls
Empower residents with information and resources
Strengthen partnerships between government, libraries, and the public
Why Community Involvement Matters
Gender-based violence continues to be one of the country’s most pressing social issues. Events such as this walk provide:
An opportunity for residents to stand together in advocacy
A space to honour victims and survivors
Visibility for ongoing GBV support services
A reminder that prevention requires collective responsibility
Participation from men, women, youth, and community organisations is encouraged, reinforcing the message that GBV is not a women’s issue, it is a societal issue.
