Established in 2004 by animal welfare advocate and pet expert Colleen Paige, the date marks a personal milestone, when her family adopted their first dog, "Sheltie," from a shelter. More than just a celebration, the day serves as a vital reminder of the importance of adopting from shelters, acknowledging working and rescue dogs, and promoting responsible pet ownership.
