A massive taxi industry shutdown has brought the City of Matlosana and surrounding districts to a virtual standstill today, Monday, 23 March 2026. The protest, which reportedly began shortly after midnight, has seen major transport arteries blocked, businesses shuttered, and thousands of commuters stranded as taxi operators voice their frustrations over infrastructure and administrative grievances.

Widespread Disruptions and Road Closures
The shutdown has effectively isolated Klerksdorp, Stilfontein, and Orkney from neighboring areas. Protesting operators have utilized taxis and burning tires to obstruct key routes, including:
N12: A critical national artery, with major blockades reported near Alabama Circle.
R30: The primary link between Klerksdorp and Orkney.
R503: Connecting Klerksdorp to Hartbeesfontein and Tigane.
The South African Police Service (SAPS), including Public Order Policing (POP) units, have been deployed across the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. North West police spokesperson, Captain Majang Skalkie, confirmed that while officers are monitoring the situation, several internal roads also remain impassable.

Core Grievances: Infrastructure and Permits
Taxi associations have cited three primary drivers for the industrial action:
Poor Road Conditions: Operators expressed deep frustration over the state of road infrastructure, particularly in Jouberton, claiming that potholes and lack of maintenance are causing severe mechanical damage to their fleets.
Permit Backlogs: Disputes regarding the issuance and renewal of operating licenses by the Provincial Permit Board continue to simmer.
Illegal Operators: The industry is demanding more stringent enforcement against "pirate" taxis that operate without legal authorization, undermining the business of legitimate permit holders.
Escalating Tensions and Conflict
Reports have emerged of high-tension encounters at various blockade points. On the Vaal Reefs road, a physical confrontation occurred earlier today when a truck driver attempted to force a passage through a taxi blockade, resulting in significant damage to several taxi vehicles.
Furthermore, some truck drivers have reportedly been held at these blockades against their will since late Sunday night. While SAPS is aware of these reports, official criminal cases have yet to be opened regarding the alleged detentions or the clashes in Orkney.

Official Response and Current Status
The North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management has confirmed that they are currently engaged in high-level talks with taxi industry representatives. A spokesperson for the department urged motorists to remain vigilant and utilize alternative routes where possible, though many primary paths remain entirely obstructed.
As of this afternoon, there is no official word on when the strike will conclude. Schools in the area have sent pupils home, and many businesses in the Klerksdorp CBD remain closed as employees are unable to reach their workplaces.
