Massive Power Outage Grips Potch Following Infrastructure Fire

Residents and businesses across a significant portion of the JB Marks Local Municipality are facing a prolonged period of darkness following a major technical failure on the primary electrical grid. What began as a standard investigation into a trip earlier today has escalated into a complex restoration project that is expected to last well into the night, if not longer.

Initial Discovery and Scope of Impact

The disruption was first noted at approximately 12:50 PM, when municipal electricians were alerted to a fault on the 132kV high-voltage line. This specific line serves as a critical artery for the town's power distribution. Initial reports confirmed that the outage is widespread, affecting several key residential and commercial sectors, including:

  • Baillie Park and Van der Hoff Park

  • Vyfhoek and Grimbeek Park

  • Mooivallei Park, Waterberry, and Tuscany

  • De Land, Hillside, and Dagbreek

Technical Breakdown and Damage Assessment

By 1:20 PM, technical teams concluded their preliminary on-site assessment. The investigation revealed severe damage: a section of the 132kV line on the JB Marks side has burned out.

The repair is not a standard fix. Restoring power requires the installation of an entirely new line. The complexity of the task is compounded by the fact that the new cable must be strung across four existing Eskom lines, necessitating a high degree of precision and specialized safety protocols to avoid further grid instability.

Specialized Intervention Required

The JB Marks Municipality has indicated that its internal technical teams do not currently possess the specific heavy-duty equipment required to reach the damaged section or perform the overhead crossing of Eskom’s infrastructure. Consequently, the municipality is in the process of appointing an external specialist contractor to lead the repairs.

Because of the scale of the damage and the logistics involved in mobilizing specialized machinery, municipal officials have issued a cautionary notice. They have stated that power is unlikely to be restored today, describing the operation as a "massive undertaking."

The municipality continues to monitor the situation and has urged residents in the affected areas to treat all electrical points as live during the outage and to unplug sensitive electronic equipment to prevent damage from potential power surges when the grid eventually stabilizes.
